Shouldn’t they put the defense coach on the block next?

Everything they said about the offense’s performance is just as true about their abysmally bad defense. They need to get someone in here that can whip this team’s run prevention into shape.

But they don’t believe they have a bad defense. Even if the recognize that we’ve been playing bad defense lately they believe it’s just an under performance issue and not a true reflection of the actual talent of the team.

They just said that about the hitting, though, so shouldn’t we discard anything they say?

is Mel too hallowed to be handed a ticking clock?

They gave him a set at the start of the season. What’s one more?

Their actions say that they believe the defense is just fine though. What other reason is there for keeping Raul in left when we have plenty of guys who can replace him?

    It’s all about the voice.

I remember, years ago at a game I was identifying the coaches — 1st, 3rd, bench, hitting, pitchings — for a friend’s kid and he asked “Why isn’t there a defense coach?” I replied, “Because by the time they get to the majors they’re supposed to know how to play defense.” And he said “But they’re supposed to know how to hit, too.”

They need to fire everyone. Bring in a whole new group of baseball people with fresh eyes and open minds. Let them decide what to do with this roster.

Uh huh, but they kept a bunch of guys who can’t hit in the lineup and then fired the hitting coach.

    Yes.

Regardless of what they said about hitting.

they have defense coaches– Perlozzo coaches the infielders, Rodriguez coaches the outfielders.

Every once in a while, someone brings up something like this that makes me rethink my decision not to have kids.

Because that is one seriously awesome kid.

Oh the sweet Irony. Bavasi’s walls are crumbling around him.

Like they say … the commanders go before the King.

  14. JMHawkins on June 9th, 2008 2:54 pm

Actually, I would assume they fire the infield coach next (not sure if that’s Perlozzo or Rodriguez) since, if they see a problem on defense, it’s Lopez or Betancourt.

Which makes sense in a way. Coaching might help Lopez and Betancourt be more crisp with the glove, but it ain’t gonna make Raul run any faster.

Uh huh, but they kept a bunch of guys who can’t hit in the lineup and then fired the hitting coach.

But those guys are all proven major league talent! They’ve got great career numbers and they’ll bounce back, they just need to get rid of that damned culture of losing!

Ultimately you’re right though, none of this makes much sense.

  16. JMHawkins on June 9th, 2008 2:56 pm

Ah, Jeff fills in the blank, infield coach is Perlozzo then. Well, I guess it’s been nice knowin’ ya Sammy…

Yeah, I’d love to see that job posting. “Remote team looking for defense coach who can turn Raul Ibanez into a Gold Glove winner. PhD in Chemistry a plus.”

  18. Jeff Nye on June 9th, 2008 2:58 pm

As much as I’d like to take credit, it was msb!

“Remote team looking for defense coach who can turn Raul Ibanez into a Gold Glove winner. PhD in Chemistry a plus.”

This is Jeff Sullivan, right? Except for the Raul Ibanez into a Gold Glove winner part (but honestly, that’s Lee Elia’s new job anyway, given how GGs are handed out).

Uh huh, but they kept a bunch of guys who can’t hit in the lineup and then fired the hitting coach.

In other words, they hired a bunch of fat strippers . . . and then fired the choreographer because tips were down.
“They were holding the pole all wrong!”
    “No, they’re just fat.”
“. . . no they are not! They just look fat because of the way they are holding the pole!”

msb, yes sorry. I blame the new site layout. Fire the layout coach.

So why is it that team management is just now getting around to admitting that the defense is lousy? I suppose they’re counting the errors. But by other metrics they’re doing about the same as last season – among the worst in MLB. The difference is that now they are looking for a scapegoat. But that sort of not accurately identifying strengths and weaknesses rests purely with management.

  23. joser on June 9th, 2008 4:50 pm

If they had chemistry it wouldn’t matter if they were fat! Wait, I’ve got it, we need veteran strippers. You know, really old ones. With grit!

    Bad joser! Bad!

It would be nice if the coaching staff were younger, but then again it would be nice if a lot of the players were younger.

I don’t know about all of you, but I think something has to be done about our “base-running coach.” Do we have one of those or is that another “prerequisite” to making it to the majors. I have two possible solutions here.

    1. Hire Harold Reynolds to be our baseball fundamentals coach or at least play his DVD on repeat in the clubhouse before every game.

    2. Hire Dan Wilson to be a little league 101 professor. He may be the slowest guy in team history, but I don’t remember ever seeing him get picked off, thrown out stealing, caught in a run-down, or forget to tag up. Secondly, he doesn’t pop bunts straight up, and this will get him out of the broadcast booth.
