Game 99, Red Sox at Mariners
7:10. Thank goodness Jarrod Washburn has returned to the rotation!
I’m so glad. Fun facts about Jarrod:
– he finished 4th in AL Cy Young voting only six years ago
– he’s a workhorse, who has started over 30 games every year since 2001 except 2004 and 2005
– his career ERA is under 4.13, far below league average
– he has a career winning percentage over .500 despite playing for the 06-08 Mariner teams
– despite having pitched over 1600 innings, he’s walked only 500 batters and given up just over 200 home runs
– at the same time, he’s struck out nearly a thousand batters — that’s almost the magic 2:1 ratio analysts and scouts look for!
– he averages a balk only once every four years
– because of the below-market contract he signed with the Mariners, he’s under team control for another season! He’s a cost-certain bargain this year and next!
– his baseball-reference page can be sponsored for only $20?
– he’s 97-0 with a 2.12 ERA in games where he’s awarded a win
– he holds opposing lefties to a .245/.302/.399 line
– he’s a seasoned playoff veteran
And he’s left-handed! It’s all true. I hope no astute team trades for him, because he’s the heart and soul of this Mariner staff.

texas has the leagues best offense
jed lowrie will drive in 2 runs this inning just watch
#147 I agree. And believe it or not Washburn is #37 in the AL in ERA (and yes, I know everyone hates to use ERA, but as far as runs allowed it’s a useful number to look at in this case). Obviously that doesn’t put him in the top tier, but that would mean that he’d be an “average” #3 starter; and for just under $10 million this year (according to ESPN.com) that’s not a bad investment.
No Mariners pitcher tonight has allowed an RBI to Boston’s number 1 through 7 hitters.
And that even held up for the 5-minute edit period!
But the M’s have the league’s worst offense, so at least they have that going for them.
well, they may have the leagues worst offense, but they may also have the leagues worst defense, too. so…yeah
As good as RA?
RBI is a useful number to look at as far as runners driven in.
I keep hearing about how few pitches Lester has used. Funny, I heard the same thing about Cliff Lee, and about the starter before that, …
The Sox would like to have every park be a Questec park. The umps get graded in those parks. I think the suspicion is that the umps call looser strike zones in the non Questec parks.
Isn’t Schilling at least still nominally part of the Sox?
Gritty single.
Aren’t we lucky!?
As Mariners fans we get to see Batista and Washburn pitch IN THE SAME GAME!!!
joy…
And believe it or not Washburn is #37 in the AL in ERA
37 out of 46. Pretty impressive stuff.
Why do I even bother watching? I don’t even hope for wins, just a good inning or two where the team, you know, scores a run or two.
Miguel Batista. When absolutely, positively, have to close the barn door after the horses are gone. And then burn down the barn.
Boy oh boy, keeping the Strasburg hopes alive.
BTW Pelekoudas, I am bored and I want to see some trades.
its just all sox fans now. reminds me of when the seahawks played GB and mirer had 7 TOs alone and there were hardly any hawk fans in the dome just pack fans. ill bet lincoln is happy about it
Wooooooo! I have Diamond Club seats for Wednesday’s game, and just realized it’s Felix Day!
Bottom of the eighth 1 out bases loaded Raul at the plate, and all he hears in his head is “STRASBURG” over and over again over the beat of Zombie Nation!!! He then grounds into the double play. Raul is committed!
I am a little upset with Batista. Given his pedigree, I thought he could have given the Sox an extra cushion. Although kudos to him for his last start. He is keeping the dream alive!
Refuse to Lose (Strasburg)!
OK, I still have FSN on. and just saw what I think is a non-ironic ad for a product called Anti Monkey-Butt powder.
Can we order some for Vidro, so that he can sit on the bench in comfort for the rest of the season?
Oooh…Rally Rocky Mountain Oysters sounds like one of those disgusting recipes that James Lileks dredged out of one of those ancient cookbooks from the 1950’s.
Well, unfortunately, those boneheads at our local RTN affiliate have rotated H-5-0 out for a while in favor of The Incredible Hulk…yecch!
Jarrod Washburn is at least worth 2 Silva Burgers and a side order of Garlic Rally Fries after his performance tonight.
#157 Considering how bad we all agree the M’s defense is, I don’t think I would use RA. ERA in this case would probably tell us a little bit more I think. Speaking of defense, I was watching the Diamondbacks game last night (Randy Johnson was pitching), and the Dbacks had some amazing defense that saved at least a run or two (impressive, considering they wound up winning 2-0). They make some bonehead plays from time to time (and had a horrible play in the 9th), but they are a fun team to watch.
ERA excuses a pitcher’s post-error performance though, which is highly important for M’s pitchers
ok. we’ve tied the Nats. Bring on the Padres!!!!!
DMZ, in that regard, then, Washburn actually fares even better. He’s only allowed 61 runs (3 unearned). Of course, the question would be how many errors have been committed behind him. Any way to figure that out?
Any team that uses Miguel “no hit infielder and rotting corpse” Cairo as the DH deserves to lose. Every game.
I feel better now, having said that.
Anyone notice the M’s had zero walks in the game?
