Wow, because what the White Sox need is less defense and less offense? Kenny Williams strikes again.

This is more baffling than the Manny trade. If they’re really going to play Griffey in center… I just don’t get it… that may cost them a trip to the playoffs.
Kenny Williams strikes again? That’s pretty harsh for a guy who has put together two 90 (or more) win teams in the last three years and is on pace for another.
Wiliams takes heat for a lot of moves, but it seems like he should have perhaps earned the benefit of the doubt by now.
Damn! The White Sox don’t even come to town the rest of the year. I thought I could at least look forward to THAT series. this season BLOWS
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Griffey is ~-30 in the field.
Stop making things so easy for the Yankees and Red Sox.
That’s not harsh at all. Please. Kenny Williams has made a lot of moves that have worked out well, but if you’re going to deny that he sometimes does some seriously baffling stuff that doesn’t work out, I don’t know what to tell you. Because he does.

Totally agree. This is the guy who recently obtained cheap, cornerstone talents like Gavin Floyd, John Danks and Carlos Quentin for a year of Freddy Garcia, Brandon McCarthy, and an A-ball prospect, respectively. Add to that obtaining Alexei Ramirez from Cuba. He has some duds over the years, but he seems to come up aces more often than not lately.
well, Kenny has always wanted Kenny on the Sox, but putting him in center? playing Konerko & Swisher at 1st? Getting someone who is not really hitting any better than Konerko or Swisher?
Floyd?
Somewhere Pocket Lint is weeping.
Isn’t that true for every GM in the league? Or at least a huge majority of them? I’m not really sure where Williams is going with this move but I would stand by that it seems harsh to just label it as “Kenny being Kenny” and leave things at that.

Benefit of the doubt implies that there’s some sort of doubt. We know Griffey’s strengths/weaknesses by now and he looks like an awful fit for the White Sox.
Also, as far as historical examples to, Kenny Williams also traded for Geoff Blum at the trade deadline in 2005. Geoff Blum then posted a -8.4 VORP over the next two months. Williams has done some things well, but he’s had a $100M+ payroll the last three years (including a $121M payroll this year), so his team ought to be contending fairly often.
Ha, ha, maybe there’s another team involved in this deal…
Yeah, the Mariners.
I’m sorry, I just had to say it. 😀
Would Junior be a skosch better in LF than Raul? Probably not, but hey, he’d bring in the fans!!!
He’d REALLY be an upgrade at DH over Vidro. A cardboard cutout of Junior would be…
Somehow I feel like this makes it even more likely Griffey will be in an Ms uniform next year.
Now that he’s out of Redsxile, his terrible terrible defense will be on display for all to see- and no GM worth his (or her…) salt will want him for anything else but a DH gig next year. But unfortunately, his sub-average hitting will also be on display for all to see- so no GM worth his (or her…) salt will want him clogging up the Professional Hitter position either.
Enter the Ms- who will overpay (hometown markup?) for him to come back and have a fun little 240/330/440 15 HR farewell tour. No one else is gonna offer half what the Ms will- he’ll be crazy not to take it.
This is all of course dependant on us not getting a GM worth his (or *ahem* her *ahem*) salt. Then all bets are off and it’s savvy trades and non-emotional contracts for everyone!
Who said that?
Seriously, Kenny’s probably the most erratic GM working today. If someone told me a team just traded their starting shortstop for a centerfielder with the intention of making the centerfielder their everyday shortstop (or, better yet, traded their second baseman for a centerfielder intending to go CF to SS, SS to 2B) Kenny would be my first through fifth choice for who did it.
Or, more likely, he breaks both kneecaps shagging a can of corn to shallow center and spends the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
I’m not sure whoever we get as GM will have a choice on whether Griffey comes back or not. Whether he can still perform or not he will put people in the seats in a final swan song season.
At least we didn’t trade for him.
Seriously, Kenny’s probably the most erratic GM working today.
And yet, his recent trades have worked out better than the M’s recent trades.
Maybe there’s something to be said for being a truly random, erratic GM. You’re less likely to talk yourself into bad deals and more likely to luck into good deals.

Well, they are contending fairly often (2005, 2006, this year). If you are going to cherry-pick a bad trade example, Blum did only very minor damage, with 224 AB that year. In the playoffs, he added 2 AB, one of which resulted in a GW homerun in inning 14, game 3 of the WS. If that’s the worst trade Kenny’s done recently, I’ll take it.
He’s a lot better GM that he is given credit for, that’s all I am saying. Call it results-based analysis if you want, but there are real signs that he learns from his mistakes and adapts. That’s more than I can say for many other GM’s in the league.
As much as I’d love to see Griffey back here next year for old time’s sake, I can’t see how it would be worthwhile for the M’s.
He can’t be an every day positional player anymore as he is a liability in the field. He can’t be an every day DH as he can’t hit lefties anymore (.689 OPS this year, .770 ’05-’07). While he can still hit RH a bit (.828 OPS this year, .932 OPS ’05-’07), he is clearly in the declining skill stage of his career and his ISO has declined the last 3 seasons and is likely to be around league average next year.
So that leaves him as a poor positional sub, a possible DH/PH against RH pitchers, and likely not a good pinch runner either. Based on all this – besides the gate revenue Griffey would help bring in – WFB looks to be a more effective player on the 25 man roster next year than Griffey. If the price was right, maybe there is room for him on the end of the bench, but please don’t spoil my memories of Griffey by making him a starter at this point of his career.
Okay, so do the Mariners face the White Sox again in Seattle this year? (Edit) Looks like we play them in Chicago next month from the 18th-20th. No games in Seattle for Junior in 2008. Oh well. Could’ve been fun 🙂
@ White Sox – August 18 – 20

This is what you get when Griffey’s name is clicked on over at the ESPN deadline scoreboard! Maybe he could help the M’s.
I agree with the general sentiment that Williams makes more good bets than bad ones. The opposite is certainly true of Bavasi and the Mariners.
For example, Williams’ bet on Matt Thornton paid off.
DMZ’s use of “erratic” to describe Kenny Williams is correct. He (KW) makes smart, shrewd moves, and then he makes absolute blunders. The M’s moves, especially the big ones, are quite consistent in how they help damage the team’s chances of winning.
OK, he’s erratic.
That’s an improvement over what we’ve had in Seattle, but is that something that’s really praiseworthy in general?
And yet, his recent trades have worked out better than the M’s recent trades.
Way to set a high bar. The Padres have a better record than the M’s so far this year, but that doesn’t make them a good team.
Prolly not…but then again, he did manage to luck into a WS championship. So, he must doing something right.
