Dave on KJR

I’ll be on with the Groz this afternoon at 4:05 pm. I’m sure we’ll talk about the trade that happened and the ones didn’t, and it should be fun as always.

Not to sound like a softy, but thank you Dave (and DMZ) with out this site and your collective knowledge, I would have left the M’s behind a long time ago.
Yeah, actually this season I spend more time on this site than I do watching/listening to games. I also eagerly read Dave’s posts (in particular) over at FanGraphs.
As for the talk topics, I don’t know how much education will be necessary about how hanging onto Raul for the draft picks (assuming he goes elsewhere) isn’t so bad, and how — whatever Lee might say — hanging onto Washburn impacts their flexibility next year. But I look forward to hearing your opinions of some of the other crazy trades (and what Toronto could possibly be thinking if they really were interested in Raul).
Also — what’s the situation now with RRS and Morrow? Are we going to see other starters coming up from Tacoma over the rest of the season (hopefully to take starts away from Batisa and Silva?) What the heck is this team going to do with more seasons of Silva’s suck-until-I’m-told-my-back-hurts?
dang. and on any other day it would be right when I’d be walking and readyto hear Dave talk to Groz, to get some KJR sanity (such as it is) back.
(Furness thinks they should have moved Beltre and just stuck Lopez at third … “he looks like a third baseman”)
#3
Furness also thinks that Erik Bedard should pitch through pain.
I wouldn’t put much stock into what he says.
The stupidity of pitching through pain is probably the one thing that’ll never be discussed on KJR. It’s that machismo thing that’s so much a part of American “masculine” culture (like never stopping to ask for directions)….
Echo that, Poop. Without the USSMariner, I’d be lost at sea and thinking about throwing myself in. These three guys make the down-decades palatable.
oh, Furness on Bedard is its own large mystery.
Actually, moving Lopez off of second base might not be such a bad idea. He is hitting enough right now to support being moved along the defensive spectrum. I was sort of thinking a corner outfield spot, myself. He’d be a marginal player there, with the bat, though.
That’s why men invented GPS, no?
Yes, put Lopez in left, then I can squint from the box seats and say, “Jesus, Pee Wee Briley has really let himself go!”
That’s freaking hilarious!
We wouldn’t be able to put him at third unless we picked up a better defensive SS. That side would be horrible.
I don’t really think he’s talented enough to keep this going, which would lead to a very, very sub-par corner outfielder.
As long as we are talking about moving our infielders to new positions, I suggest somebody else’s town.
Craig Monroe just got a DFA notice–he would be a better bat in the lineup as DH than the ‘huslin’ Miguel Cairo’. . . .
The fact that Silva is going to be around for awhile is really depressing.
Yeah but does Monroe have Mariner grit???
Furness also said it was absurd to think that two draft choices were worth more than any two people on the Blue Jays’ 40 man roster, and that some blog must have gotten too much influence in the thinking of the Mariners’ FO. You can’t make this stuff up.
I like Ian for the most part, but his strong suit is NOT baseball…
I have to say Dave, there’s not yet a thing you’ve said that I’ve disagreed with (up to and including talking about trading Lopez).
I do have to say, this being my first time hearing you on the radio, god DAMN do you talk fast 😛 I had a hard time keeping up in a few spots.
“If Jose Lopez puts on a few more pounds he’ll start to look like a talk radio host.”
LOL. But I agree with Dave. Sell high on Lopez and tell Yuni to get his shit together.
Fantastic stuff. If I could think as fast as you talk well…. Thanks for all you do in educating the unenlightened.
Just because they’re on a 40 man roster doesn’t necessarily mean they’re valuable players that will contribute on a contending team.
Exhibit A: 2008 Seattle Mariners 40 man roster
We’re looking to rebuild with young talent, not just any two “major league caliber” players. Personally, I would rather have Raul and two high draft picks with a ton of upside than trading him for crap like, say… Willie Bloomquist and Jose Vidro… &#$^%$
Groz actually suggested that Lopez get heavier so he could play outfield. Huhh??!!! That’s why I don’t listen to KJR except when Dave is on.
But let’s not kid ourselves, Bloomquist and Vidro aren’t “major league caliber” players by any means. It was merely an example.
“Worth more than any two players” – by that did he mean to imply the deal called for the Mariners to take any two from the Blue Jays they wanted (therefore the best two) or that it called for the Blue Jays to pick two players they wanted to dump (therefore the worst two)?
I would trade many if not most of the players on the Mariner’s 40-man roster, straight up (i.e. one-for-one), for a first round draft pick. Especially if the team giving me the draft pick eats the salary of the “Veteran.”
I dunno. Bloomquist is a major league caliber 25th man. Vidro is a major league caliber…bases-clogger?
The M’s front office would do themselves some good by hiring Dave as an assistant. The downside? He’d likely have to leave USS Mariner.
Hey, let’s support Willie this year. He’s sporting the highest OBP on the team, and if his hitting skills aren’t major league caliber, at least he has the brain to make the most of them. Which is more than one can say for some of his team-mates.
I’m warming to Willie.
I was paraphrasing. He was suggesting, based on what I think is essentially high-ending the rumors, that it was Overbay and a starting pitcher (now in the minors, can’t remember the name, but I’m sure someone here knows who I’m talking about).
Yahoo mentioned that some teams came calling on Putz and that we turned them away. Has anyone else heard this? He would have been a great trade candidate — especially since we just dropped our 1st round draft pick on a closer.
Which is still ridiculous, given that we don’t know who the players were.
The pitcher mentioned was Jesse Litsch, which I think must be a wild rumor. Litsch for Ibanez seems like a steal.
Now, why didn’t Cashman think of that? He could have had Washburn for a Yankee-level (about #15 or so) draft pick next June.
——————–
Speaking of the Yankees, hard to imagine but the oft-maligned Sir Sidney is engaged in a 2-hit vs. 3-hit pitchers’ duel with Ervin Santana of the Angels. Who’d have guessed? Although Sir Sidney is surely pitching for his MLB (or at least Yankee) life…
I might add that that’s over 5-1/2 innings. Not too shabby. Typical of the Yankees to squeeze every last bit of usefulness out of guys who should be out of baseball.
I heard the Furness comments. Crazy. They were saying the last sandwich pick the M’s had was…Michael Garciaparra–picked one pick ahead of David Wright. They were trying to make the point that the
Michael Garciaparra’s of the world wouldn’t be worth trading Raul for..of course they missed the fact that David Wright WOULD have been a great sandwich pick.
Hey #23, You know MLB teams are not allowed to trade draft picks, right?
That would be nice.
#21 Dave’s awesomest response ever to that comment by the Groz: “If he gets any heavier, he’ll be a sports talk radio host.”
So who’s got the most sense on KJR? I’m curious, since they’re all a little, uh, plump, on the banal side.
That’s not quite what he said. Groz suggested that Lopez move to a corner outfield spot AND put on a few pounds of muscle to help his power.
#14: Monroe would probably go play for the Podunk Schnozzletonks for free beer before coming here
pygmalion: You’ve got to be ON the bases to clog them.
