Photo caption in article says “The Mariners have missed the hustle and versatility of Willie Bloomquist.” 🙂
I wonder if his free agent offer from an NL club looking to exploit his versatility, speed, and character will decline now that he is susceptible to the injury bug.
That Mariners all-purpose performer has a first-degree sprain; I think those are the worst. Gosh. And he didn’t get the bunt down…in that situational hitting.
Not even Bloomquist can save the M’s from 100 losses.
We’re in full-blown tank mode now. When you start sitting your emotional leader for the duration of the year with suspect injuries, it’s clear that you’re trying to lose.
For what it’s worth, Willie has given us one of the greatest batting lines in baseball history:
.279/.377/.285
Godspeed, Boom Boom.
Well, I think that’s an appropriate exclamation point on this lost season. One of remaining players that represents all that is wrong with the team now himself is out of action. Thank goodness we have Bloomquist Lite! 🙂
Notice I didn’t say he WAS the problem (he isn’t). I said he REPRESENTS the problem of valuing the wrong things and poorly evaluating talent in general.
Sic transit gloria mundi.
I had a chance to prepare myself for this sad, sad possibility … for it first came up about two weeks ago, when he went on the DL — Kirby Arnold suggested then that “it’s possible Bloomquist — a Port Orchard native who the Mariners drafted in 1999 — has played his last game for the Mariners.”
I don’t get it….
🙁
I heard an interview with Bloomy on KJR about a week ago in which he was asked if he was coming back. In a roundabout way he basically said he would go anywhere they’d let him start, otherwise he’d be happy to come back.
Is medical marijuana indicated for injuries of the kind Willy has?
Perhaps a weekend of clamming will soothe that hamstring right up?
I have a funny feeling Willie Ballgame may land in San Diego next season…joining forces with our Hated Rivals the Friars.
One of the funniest things about this is that Willie might be considered an upgrade at three different positions, assuming Raul was switched to DH.
This season rules.
With the Ms trailing the Nats by 1.5 games (in the loss column), how does the WFB news effect the Strasburg race?
Also, Strasburg is represented by Boras. Given his college experience, a major league contract probably isn’t an issue but assuming the Ms can come through in the clutch, would ownership allow the Ms to pay over “slot”?
Now where would we be without Cairo?
Cincinatti?
SEAHAWKS!(clap, clap) SEAHWAKS!(clap, clap)
We should separate Willie the Symbol from Willie the Man. The Symbol hss been used by management and sportswriters to stand for the intangible values they cherish (local, white: perfect subject for this).
Willie the Man, like every college star who doesn’t quite make it in the majors, believes in himself, believes he’s better than the chance the team has given him, and wants to play everyday. There are worse players who do in fact play everyday (our shortstop and our former starting catcher, for instance). The same syndrome that makes Willie tick is the one that allows Kansas City and Pittsburgh to sign free agents. I for one wish him well in his future endeavors.
tsk. tsk. tsk.
Strasburg is advised by Boras.
In case Bloomquist has played his last game as an M, I will always be grateful that I was at that game and witnessed the most spectacular display of hustle the game has ever seen.
Godspeed, Willie B!
So the Willie Era is pretty much over?
It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHY GOD WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Rick Rizzs, is that you? Climb down off the ledge buddy, we have some nice SSRIs for you to try. No, it won’t be the same as lauding Mr Grit’n’Hustle from the moment he ties on his spikes until you follow him into the shower after the game, but it will get you through the rest of the season.
(Now we just have to get all the sharp objects out of the media rooms for when Bloomquist leaves in free agency. Though I think Rizzs could still strangle/choke himself with his toupee)
would ownership allow the Ms to pay over “slot
We’re probably getting way off topic here, but [deleted, off topic. C’mon, you’ve been around long enough to know how this works]
Not even Bloomquist can save the M’s from 100 losses.
I was thinking – facetiously, of course, in case you need that pointed out to you 🙂 — before last night’s game that if the Mariners won every game between now and the end of the season they’d be a .500 team…
Sorry to say, I actually quit watching last night’s game after Raul short-hopped — what was it, his 3rd or 4th so far in the game? — yet another fly-to-left-field. I’m getting REALLY tired of Hargrove/McLaren/Riggleman putting that man in the OF for “defense”.
Given where the M’s have ended up (in small part due to explicitly toeing the line on “slot”) I wouldn’t be surprised if the Commish mutters a little under his breath but basically looks the other way if the M’s decide to go over slot in the next draft. I mean, I can imagine the phone call:
“Bud, please, we’re so screwed. We’ve got what, Ichiro, Felix, and… nothing. And now Bloomquist is leaving in free agency!”
“Bloomquist! He’s leaving!? My god man, why didn’t you say so? That will tear the very heart out of the team! I had some hope for you guys with him to build around, but now… Of course we’ll allow you to go over slot in the draft! The Bedard trade is nothing compared to the M’s bereft of Bloomquist! The very fate of baseball in the Northwest hangs in the balance!”
In practice, I don’t think it matters. Given the schedules of the two teams I don’t see how the M’s pass the Nationals in the race to the bottom. (Despite what this team’s best efforts, Felix Day does give them a chance to win every five days after all). And there are plenty of other good players in the draft.
I do agree with Breadbaker. Willie Bloomquist is one of the top thousand or so ballplayers on the planet. Not bad at all, and I wish him luck.
Don’t look now, but Willie Bloomquist was a useful player this season. He was a better defender than our starting shortstop, left fielder, first baseman, and probably second baseman, and having a .377 OBP coming off the bench is, not to put too fine a point on it, totally awesome.
Sure, the defense is a damning statement about the team, but Bloomie was still worth having around this year.
Please cross-apply my standard, oft-repeated statement on how Bloomquist is useful here.
Deadspin is throwing links here, meaning that even the guys at Deadspin love USSM. How could they not?
I don’t think people realize how bizarre that is. An OBP lower than SLG is rare; 88 points lower might conceivably be an MLB record.
SLG lower than OBP, you mean.
I read the post before I saw the headline, and my heart sank thinking something happened to the King on this Happy Felix Day! Then I looked up and laughed…Willie, you were a good 25th man, but you are on your way out of town…good luck…see you back here when your deal is up with the Pads, Nats, or Pirates…
Duh, yes, I mean SLG lower than OBP. Sorry I didn’t check back in time to correct it.
Hahahahaha!!!!!! My thoughts exactly DMZ! I couldn’t have said it any better myself!
Uh…yeah, thanks dude. I’ve read your blog. Unless the sarcasm of this post is meant to indicate that you think Bloomquist was not a useful player off the bench this season, we’re not disagreeing about anything.
Argh.
If we have in fact seen the last of WFB in a Mariner uniform…um…meh.
I know he’s been a lightning rod for a lot of critcism about the Mariners. I didn’t find as much to complain about his abilities, as I did the mind boggling fact that the M’s FO and management seemed to believe that he is so much better than he actually is.
Player evaluation? Meet your poster boy…
I have literally no idea what you’re upset about here.
