The M’s just managed as many victories against the A’s that series as they did all of 2006. Now, welcome to the Twins– Check out these probables.

Yeah, this could get really, really ugly. Like spend a couple bucks on a gas mask ugly.

Long time reader here, first time posting… I’m a long-time Mariners fan since moving here to Seattle, but my heart and soul remains with the Twins when they come to visit. I’m really excited about tonight’s game as its my first time to see Liriano in person. Too bad I’ll be plagued with Batista though. The last time I saw him was at the earlier Twins series in the bullpen, trying to get the fans to talk to him, but no one gave him a minute of their day.

The team only stinks metaphorically, but the gas masks really could help with noxious clouds of deadly rally fry gas.

There was during WTO, though I never found out what “measure of expediency” they were appealing to when they adopted it.
I certainly wouldn’t recommend going into a bank wearing one.
Anyway, you don’t wear it into the Safe, you carry it in and only put it on when the stench from the M’s starting pitching reaches tear-gas levels. Or you’re afraid the cameras may be panning the crowd and someone might see you there. (Though they would then have to admit to watching the game on TV, so the whole incident gets filed under “don’t ask, don’t tell.”)
Though it might make for a fun “rally fries” costume. Get a sign saying “This season stinks.” And as long as you don’t take the mask off, no one will know you’re begging for food like a shih tzu.

I noticed it. But I was more amused by his take-away from the whole experience of getting tear-gassed:

When would the stench of Batista’s pitching qualify as tear-gas level? Warming up in the bullpen before the game? Warmup pitches on the field prior to the first inning? Or in the first inning after he gives up the first 3 runs?
I’ll be at the game tomorrow. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get a gas mask by security.
Meh, just wear a paper bag instead. It’s cheaper, won’t get ya in trouble, and — given this season — quite appropriate.
and if one doesn’t cut holes it, the bag can be very useful if one begins to hyperventilate.

And we’ll get to watch Eddie Guardado pitch again. He’ll probably beat us in one of these games, just for another punch to the gut.
Wow why is Batista back in the rotation, he can’t even get anyone out coming out of the bullpen!
Honestly since this season is so depressing as is, I’d much rather see more of the young guys, I mean I actually want to watch the game to see how RRS or Fierebend will do starting than watch Batista or Silva get curb stomped.

Face it folks – the M’s are just truly pathetic on so many levels. As a half season ticket holder it will be back to a 16 game plan next year – if that. I won’t mention how hard it’s been to sell unwanted tickets this year. At leats a dozen or more were simply given away to charity. Even tickets to see the Yankees aren’t selling right now.
Do I hear a slide in ticket prices coming on for 2009?
I don’t consider Eddie’s departure to have been anything but an appropriate move. We had another, cheaper, more effective closer and it was time for Eddie to move on. That is exactly the sort of move management needs to make from time to time. Loved him when he was here, glad he was gone, wish him well everytime except when he faces us.

What facinates me about the Twins is that they seem to use a slightly different model for success than the A’s. Whereas the A’s stress the OBP approach, the Twins for quite some time appeared to go with more ‘tools’ guys. I may be TOTALLY wrong. Both have been able to maintain winning teams over most of a decade with small-ish budgets but with different schools of thought. Any ideas here?
Hey Derek, was that article you linked to written by the same Jeff Shaw that used to write for this blog? If so, its good to know he’s back in country and writing about his usual interesting topics. Is there any chance he’d write another Evil Rick Rizzs post? I miss that evil bastard!
I’m real excited to see TBA pitch. He’ll be better than Batista anyway.
So far as I can tell, there has never been a pitcher in the majors with the initials TBA.
The difference between the M’s and grown-up teams. To make room for Eddie, the Twins designated Mike Lamb, who has a year and a buyout remaining on his contract, for assignment. No fuss, just get rid of the dead weight and consider it a sunk cost.

It may not be that way at all. LAMB will probably clear waivers, and may accept a minor-league assignment; and be called back up next week.
