Game 162, Athletics at Mariners
Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn:
Seattle, 60-101
Washington, 59-101
Philly having clinched is scheduled to rest Hamels against Perez… please, pitch Hamels. Give him a couple of innings. Keep him loose.
Seattle, desperate for the loss, puts Dickey out. But Oakland attempts to block with Outman!
What’s the worst lineup the M’s could plausibly run out there without getting a nasty call from Selig? I’m thinking:
DH-L Valbuena
C-R Johnson
1B-L LaHair
2B-L Hulett
SS-R Betancourt
3B-R Cairo
LF-L Ibanez
CF-L Reed
RF-L Ichiro!
I’m playing for the platoon disadvantage there.

Nats are down by two in the 7th. Not looking good.
Wow, if these scores hold up, there could be quite a few extra games.
Chicago would have to play Detroit tomorrow, plus a game vs Minnesota if they win that one.
Plus, the Mets and Brewers will have a one-game playoff if both win today.
This could be a whole lot of fun.
You have to give the nod to Wlad over Ichiro.
According to Krueger, this team needs more aging veterans to help lead the younger players. Funny, I thought that was part of the problem this year…?
What is the difference between the first and second picks in the upcoming draft? Is it pretty much a race for Stausberg? Is there a clear number two? And, if the Mariners did draft him, do you think they’d pay up to be able to sign him? Do they get anything is this guy they still haven’t signed yet never does and goes back into the draft?
I’m just all full of questions.
Now, Nats are up by two in the eighth… crossing my fingers this holds out.
Nevermind… It’s the Phillies up by two. Dang
And there goes #1.
Grant Green, a SS from USC is the consensus number 2 pick right now. He’s been compared to Evan Longoria and might be able to stick at SS in the bigs. He would be at least 2+ years from seeing the majors though in most peoples estimation.
Wow, the Brewers and Mets games both look good. What a shame if Milwaukee loses a Sabathia gem by getting shut out.
There’s still a lot that can happen — as Dave noted, the #1 doesn’t always go #1, and you can’t know between now and draft day what’ll happen to consensus.
There have been reports that the Nats have been absolutely drooling over Strasburg so I doubt there is an arm at least that would tempt them more.
However, I don’t think it’s a lock that the Nats grab Strasburg at #1 because it’s going to take so much money/contract capitulation to sign him. That said, the Ms could pass for the very same reason at #2.
I’m just pissed because the Ms even suck at sucking.
Apparently Dickey didn’t get the memo.
Hey man. Dickey is doing his part. What a team player.
Would Ichi have caught that?
Actually having an Evan Longoria bat on the left side of the infield doesn’t sound too bad at this point. Third and short can be sorted out between Triunfel and Green. The right side would be much more of a toss up.
Wow, don’t look now, but the Mets’ ship is sinking fast.
This Outman guy throws cheese. 97 from the left side. Wowza.
Any chance that MLB forces the Nationals and Marlins to makeup that cancelled game from Thursday, just so maybe the Nationals win and go to 60-102?
Oh wait, nevermind–the tiebreaker from last year means that they’d *still* get first pick(assuming the M’s lose today, that is!)
Drat!
We can’t even finish in last right! Ugh, what a season…
At least things start to get interesting for us again after today. We’ll get to see what offseason changes happen.
Nationals lose. So it’s pretty simple. We lose, we get the #1 pick. We win, we get the #2 pick.
Here’s hoping for a bullpen meltdown…
Nationals lose. So it’s pretty simple. We lose, we get the #1 pick. We win, we get the #2 pick.
Uh. No. Nationals lose, so we get the #2 no matter what.
I thought since they missed a game, if we both have the same ammount in the loss column, we win the tie breaker…
Things I was hoping/watching for today:
1. The race for last place: didn’t work out too well.
2. The Angels ending on 99 losses: not looking good.
3. The MLB hits race. Ichiro’s at 212 with 3 innings to go, and Pedroia’s at 213 with one game to go.
Quite unlike the past 5 months, it’s been a tough day to be an M’s fan!
I thought since they missed a game, if we both have the same ammount in the loss column, we win the tie breaker
No, if we both have the same number in the loss column, then because the Nationals missed a game, they have one fewer win. Therefore a worse record and the #1 overall pick. No tiebreaker necessary.
For the sake of passing on information: And even if we did have the same record, Washington wins the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker goes by each team’s record last season and the Nationals had a worse record than we did in 2007.
So long 2008 season. And good riddance to you.
I said it yesterday.
The A’s took a dive.
At least this team bested the 1983 Seattle Mariners…by all of 1 win.
And we beat the 1980 and 1978 Seattle Mariners’ teams as well.
Take that, late 70s/early 80s Mariners. HA! 😉
The Seattle Mariners: Can’t win, can’t even lose when they’re supposed to.
I don’t think this sports year can get much worse.
Look at it this way, it’s not like one draft pick was going to cure all that ails this team anyhow, although getting Strasburg would’ve helped.
Here’s hoping a blind squirrel finds a nut and the Mariners pick a great GM.
That’s a lot more important at this point.
And anyway, given it’d be the M’s drafting a pitcher, wouldn’t Strasburg have shredded his labrum signing the contract?
Anyone else notice that they (Nationals) lifted Perez way early when he wasn’t doing that bad and they kept Zimmerman, Milledge, Boone, Guzman and Dukes out of the game all together!!!!
They threw that fucking game damnit!
At least the offseason will be an interesting one with lots of big decisions for the club. I hope for the best, but am worried that we will again be disappointed by the moves (or lack thereof).
Wow, ESPN just announced that Freddy Garcia will be starting for the Tigers in the makeup game tomorrow. Should be interesting, given his history with Ozzie.
Tom T. Right on with your importance of the GM vrs Strasburg. I want to thank DMZ, Dave, the mods and all the regular posters for getting me through this season with a better understanding of the game,( it is a game right?) and hope for the future. Looking forward to the off season with cautious high hopes.
The Angels are at 100-62 and we’re at 61-101. If we can just put on a late season push with the young kids and the Angels collapse like they did in 1995, then maybe, just maybe…Oh wait. Season’s over. Never mind. That’s a wrap.
When you think about it, game was the perfect ending to this season.
The Mariners win (a game)! The Mariners lose (the first pick)!
Even when the Mariners win, they still lose.
This is the offseason we also hope that everyone else signs their own free agents, so there are fewer sandwich picks. We get the second pick in the second round, too.
