Go Jamie! This is the only game of the Series in which I’ll be rooting for the Phillies.

Bummer about the rain delay. Of course if they were going to pick a game to be rained out…

But it’s supposed to be a passing shower, and that new field in Philly is supposed to drain well, so who knows. Moyer is one pitcher who shouldn’t be bothered by a long delay. Don’t know about Garza. But they way he’s been pitching this postseason Jamie is going to need all the help he can get.

And yeah, this is the only game where I’ll be rooting for the Phillies, and only as long as Moyer is on the mound. However, since I’d like to have the series go 7 games the Phillies have to win one more, so this might as well be the one. How about a no hitter, Jamie?

Of all the shows in Fox’s library, “Til Death” is what they come up with to plug into the rain delay? What’s the thinking there? That the viewing audience should be as miserable as the folks stuck in the stands without rain gear?

Probably, “on TBS they sat through the Harvey Show so it doesn’t matter what we put up here.”

I would love to see Jamie pitch an amazing game, but then the bullpen is welcome to blow the lead afterwords..I put money on Tampa to win the WS when I was in Vegas in May (15-1 odds)…
Jamie Moyer is a class act and if Philly does win it all I’ll be happy to see Jamie Moyer get a much deserved WS ring!

    Go Jamie!

  8. Jeff Nye on October 25th, 2008 7:46 pm

Matt Garza looks terrible, but boy can the Rays play defense.

  9. thecommish on October 25th, 2008 8:15 pm

Got to pull for the AL even when a home guy is going for the Phils

  10. jasonmcgillie on October 25th, 2008 8:36 pm

man, it is so awesome to see Moyer pitching in the series. SO AWESOME.

  11. DMZ on October 25th, 2008 8:50 pm

Stilllllllllll getting the strikeouts. Heh heh heh.

  12. Jeff Nye on October 25th, 2008 8:56 pm

Moyer learned that pitch from Abner Doubleday, you know.

  13. DMZ on October 25th, 2008 9:01 pm

    That recently?

  14. Jeff Nye on October 25th, 2008 9:02 pm

Poor Moyer even had Tim McGraw messing with him in the pregame, but GO GEEZER GO!

  15. DMZ on October 25th, 2008 9:02 pm

It always cracks me up to think about hitters watching their scouting packages and thinking “yeah, yeah, I hit that pitch back in AA…” and then they go 0-4 with two strikeouts.

“They’re after me lucky charms!” – Matt Garza

  17. Jeff Nye on October 25th, 2008 9:09 pm

I’m glad the strike zone evened out after the first couple innings.

Early on, Moyer was getting the outside corner and Garza wasn’t; now it’s a liberal strike zone all around.

  18. MattThompson on October 25th, 2008 9:12 pm

Man, this is just a classic Moyer game. Makes me nostalgic.

  19. DMZ on October 25th, 2008 9:15 pm

Another fine argument for electronic strike zones. There, I said it.

  20. Jeff Nye on October 25th, 2008 9:16 pm

Holy Moyer! That was a great flip to Howard.

  21. MattThompson on October 25th, 2008 9:16 pm

Moyer: “Old man? Can an old man do that?!?”

  22. Jeff Nye on October 25th, 2008 9:21 pm

Another fine argument for electronic strike zones. There, I said it.

As long as it’s fair to both sides on a given night, I don’t mind variability in the strike zone.

It’s one of the few places I think you can make a concession to the people who want everything to be sepia-toned and old-timey.

You know, like when Moyer was a rookie.

  23. MattThompson on October 25th, 2008 9:31 pm

You know, like when Moyer was a rookie.

And pitched in the first ever night game.

  24. Jeff Nye on October 25th, 2008 9:54 pm

Wow, highs and lows for Carlos Ruiz in this game.

  25. msb on October 25th, 2008 9:57 pm

there was a piece this morning about it being the 100th anniversary of “Take me out to the ballgame”, which noted that, contrary to popular belief, was not first sung by Jamie Moyer….

  26. msb on October 25th, 2008 10:24 pm

ah, now that is even more nostalgic– Moyer with a lead that the bullpen gives away …

  27. Jeff Nye on October 25th, 2008 10:40 pm

    Have to avoid…THE DOBBER.

I love the five man infield though.

  28. earinc on October 25th, 2008 10:51 pm

Can I just say… Player of the Game: JAMIE FUCKING MOYER!!!

    That was special.

  29. killer_ewok18 on October 25th, 2008 10:52 pm

I think you mean Dobby the house elf.

  30. msb on October 25th, 2008 11:07 pm

    Dobby the Bench Elf.

  31. TotallyNotWilly on October 25th, 2008 11:56 pm

So far I’ve been for the Rays, but tonight I learned I can not root against Jamie Moyer. Combined with my serious jealousy over the Rays getting to the Series so quickly as a franchise, and Florida getting THREE World Series and TWO TITLES since the Marlins were created in 1993…I think I’m changing horses midstream.

I feel dirty, but GO PHILS!

  32. msb on October 26th, 2008 1:01 am

boy, everything was in his favor tonight– a delay that could unsettle the young Rays, a congenial umpire, a nice brisk wind blowing in …

  33. TomTuttle on October 26th, 2008 1:41 am

2 more wins and Jamie has his ring!

    Go Jamie Go!

  34. eternal on October 26th, 2008 8:11 am

    Nicely done by Jamie.

Balfour now has like 7 ER in 8 innings in the post season. Maybe he’s not meant for the post-season?

  35. Bretticus on October 26th, 2008 8:17 am

    Epically small sample size

  36. killer_ewok18 on October 26th, 2008 8:22 am

I love how Steve Phillips was saying contact pitchers don’t do well in the postseason, only fireballers do, bla bla bla…

Eat it. Ugh, and there is going to be a whole cable channel with people like Steve Phillips giving “analysis” 24/7.

  37. msb on October 26th, 2008 8:49 am

and there is going to be a whole cable channel with people like Steve Phillips giving “analysis” 24/7.

well, on the radio side they tend to lean away from the Phillipses of the world

Re: Jeff Nye’s I love the five man infield though.

    Some questions:

    1. Has anyone kept a record of how often it works ? 10% of the time ? 50% ?
    2. Is it done only when a GB pitcher is on the mound ?
    3. Has a team ever used a 4-man OF–such as when a FB pitcher is on the mound ?

  39. Steve T on October 26th, 2008 12:16 pm

Well, in a situation like last night, you kind of have to, whether it “works” or not. They could have had an EIGHT-man infield; any ball in the outfield would have been an automatic victory. The Rays were pretty much doomed the instant he got to third base.

  42. ahhruff on October 26th, 2008 6:11 pm

What’s the black stuff all over the top of Blaton’s cap? He keeps going to it.

Reminds me of the Kenny Rogers “dirt” incident of two years ago.

  43. Mike Snow on October 26th, 2008 7:32 pm

I like how Seattle pulled the best ratings for the game outside of Philly and Tampa.

  44. John D. on October 27th, 2008 12:41 am

Steve T. said: [of the 5-man infield]in a situation like last night, you kind of have to, whether it “works” or not.

I don’t agree that you have to use the 5-man infield. What if the batter hits a short fly or liner near a foul line or to dead center ? If all three OFs are playing where they should be, they catch it, and hold the runner at 3rd.
[With a 5-man infield (and only two OFs), the ball drops in.]

  45. John D. on October 29th, 2008 12:25 am

    The 5-man infield

BTW, the first time the Mariners tried this, it didn’t work. (Back-fired!)
Paniagua was on the hill, Piniella brought in Bournigal (to be the 5th infielder), and removed LF Timmons (leaving Griffey and Buhner to cover the OF).
Lawton (Twins) hit a fly to short left, and that was the game.
Had Timmons been in there, he would have caught it, and held the runner at 3rd.

Congrats, Jamie. Couldn’t be happier for you. Although the 2008 Mariners suffered through a miserable season, you have brought a ray of sunshine to the Pacific Northwest with the 2008 championship. Moyer, you deserve to be a World Series champion. Congrats!

  47. skipj on October 29th, 2008 8:12 pm

    Jamie gets his ring.
    Perfect, just perfect.
Hard work and perseverance wins the day. Nice to see.
However, under the new ‘redistribution plan’ adopted by MLB, his Series ring goes to a 2nd year utility player on the Padres. Sure, Jamie earned it, but he already makes good money, been in some League Championship series. The kid with the Padres needs a little help, “you know. step up, spread the wealth around”
