Pitchers and catchers report in 22 days (wait…Friday the 13th?!?! I thought baseball players were supposed to be a superstitious bunch!)

Opening Day is 74 days away. (Damn, that seems like so long!)

M’s home opener is 82 days away.

    BASEBALL BASEBALL BASEBALL!!!! AAAAAAAAA!!!!!

    Sorry, channeling Animal there for a sec.

    Nice animal reference.

    You guys should put up a countdown clock or something. Or are those too painful/aggravating? I never can figure out how I feel about them.

    According to the schedule on mlb.com, the first day for reporting is Saturday the 14th, a valentine for baseball fans if you will. So more like 22 days to go before they report, those things always depend on whether the endpoints are supposed to be included in the counting.

    If you really can’t wait, don’t forget FanFest this weekend!

    Don’t forget the WBC is coming too.

  7. Paul B on January 22nd, 2009 11:22 am

    Yes, the WBC starts in early March. First game on March 5. Final game on March 23.

    Here is a schedule:
    http://web.worldbaseballclassic.com/schedule/

    Games are going to be on ESPN2 and MLB mostly, with a handful on ESPN.

    For those with Directv, MLBN is channel 213. I happened to blunder across it awhile back.

    Yeah, and single-game tickets just went on sale. I figure since I live in San Diego now I’m gonna have to check it out.

    I’m jonesing to get over to spring training this year too. I’ve never been and it’s not that far of a drive…

    I’ve had to pull out my “the offseason sucks” shirt. Frequently.

    I bought a brand new pair of shoes yesterday, fished my beat up glove out of the closet and found a stick I can use as a bat, so…..hit it!

    Well, beat the drum and hold the phone – the sun came out today!
    We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field.
    A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man;
    Anyone can understand the way I feel.

    Chorus:
    Oh, put me in, coach – I’m ready to play today;
    Put me in, coach – I’m ready to play today;
    Look at me, I can be centerfield.

    Well, I spent some time in the mudville nine, watchin’ it from the bench;
    You know I took some lumps when the mighty casey struck out.
    So say hey willie, tell ty cobb and joe dimaggio;
    Don’t say “it ain’t so”, you know the time is now.

    Chorus

    Yeah! I got it, I got it!

    Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
    You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride.
    Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all – a moment in the sun;
    (pop) it’s gone and you can tell that one goodbye!

    Chorus
    Chorus
    Yeah!

    TWENTY FOUR DAYS!

    One of the things I’m most looking forward to from Arizona is Shannon Drayer’s radio reports on KIRO. I’m so glad KIRO hired her to do the same job she did so well for KOMO.

    Just anything but another painful 100 loss season, please.

    Let’s get this thing started!!!!!

    They did? Wow, that’s great news. Oh, I see it here.

    pretty much every sports page in the area had a “well, it’s about time” paragraph. Hopefully she’s off to the lunch and ready to provide audio for the next Hot Stove show.

    hey– KJR is at Jimmy’s, talking baseball & playing interviews from the luncheon, including Jack, Wak & Grifol. I assume they’ll be up on Ian’s page later.

    I’ve really been jonesin’ for some baseball. We’re taking the five hour trip to Seattle to catch FanFest (me, the wife, and two kids). Should be a good time. I’ve already ordered another DVR that I can hook up to the bedroom television. Now I can record the games I’ll miss while I’m at work. Spring Training can’t come fast enough.

    From Waka Waka:

    “”Obviously the reports are good on Bedard, and also Morrow. Psychologically, if we can get those guys healthy, that’s 3 pretty good starting pitchers, and we’ll work from there.”

    Is this the guarantee for Morrow’s status?

  24. Breadbaker on January 22nd, 2009 4:47 pm

    Is this the guarantee for Morrow’s status?

    It seems like it’s both that and a serious kick in the behind to the Bus, the Buffet and the Author.

  25. joser on January 22nd, 2009 4:53 pm

    a serious kick in the behind to the Bus, the Buffet and the Author.

    Who are share the stage with the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Or perhaps the Butcher, the Baker, and the Candlestick Maker. (Wait, those last three are local sports journalists).

    I love that we now have obscure nicknames for the guys who aren’t stars. I wonder if we can get Baseball-Reference to recognize them?

  26. Sports on a Schtick on January 22nd, 2009 4:55 pm

    And now news that Bedard is fully healed.

    Although I’m itching for baseball a part of me can’t help but wish for awesome offseason news to keep rolling in.

  27. msb on January 22nd, 2009 7:23 pm

    pretty much everyone says Morrow is going in as a starter … at least for now.

    Went to fanfest today. The talk by the chef, Jeremy Bryant was as revealing as anything I heard at the Seattle Public Library Event.

    Let’s just say that the new management has taken decisive steps to prevent a repeat of the enormous weight gains of players such as Carlos Silva, Jose Vidro and Yuni. Among other things, the Mariners will no longer allow a deep fat fryer in the kitchen, and the development of a healthier menu is in the works.

    Here’s to hoping that the 2009 Mariners will no longer be the most out of shape team in the major leagues.
