Bad news from West Tennessee tonight – Carlos Triunfel suffered a fractured tibia tonight. That pretty much guarantees he’s out for the year.

Well that really fucking sucks. How badly does this screw with his long term development (other than the obvious missed playing time)?
This is ten times worse than the Morrow meltdown.
Once the bone heals Triunfel should be back to full strength physically. That’s some silver lining.
So AA in ’10, AAA in ’11… yikes. Three years away. A major blow, but hopes are still high for Carlos.
I broke my tibia and I was out for 3 1/2 months, so there may be hope he makes it back towards the final month of the season.
Well there goes the gem of our farm system
Wow, that sucks!
So does this mean he is going to be made into a relief pitcher now?
On the bright side, now he can’t be converted to a reliever until at least September.
Seriously. These past few weeks have been brutal for the system, tonight being especially tough.
I expect the FO to take a long look at Grant Green. There is no middle infielder depth in the minors.
AH! Mark, I tell you what…….
Ya, it will most likely be Green or White I believe.
Except that Grant Green isn’t worthy of the #2 overall pick. And ideally you should draft the best player available, regardless of need…
Ugh……..Get better soon man.
I agree on both counts Paul. But Green is one of the most ML-ready players in the draft and we know GMZ has emphasized that. And that middle infield depth in the minors is awful. Also considering that the major level depth isn’t so great…
If the draft were tonight I wouldn’t draft Green #2 either. But it has to be considered.
Craptastic that’s just revagioulus………
Let’s not panic. Speaking as a former anatomist, we’ll need to know a lot more about the nature of the fracture before we run in circles, scream and shout.
At the worst, barring weird bone-related pathologies, he should be out about 3-4 months – at the worst! It could be as little as 2 months. Let’s wait for the team’s report on the matter.
These sports medicine guys are wizards. I’ll bet he’s back in action in a month, if not full-contact game action.
too bad you can’t trade draft picks in the MLB. If I was the Mariners picking #2 and there’s no Strasberg, then I’d try and trade down and get Green later on…
This Triunfel news does make it ‘interesting’ to see how the FO reacts during the upcoming draft. How many players SHOULD be selected ahead of Green at #2?
OH MAN! it looked awful last night i didn’t realize how bad. What a major blow, on the flip side Halman hit a bomb to right field last night, and adam moore had a couple of solid hits.
His return would depend on where the fracture is and what type. Hopefully its in the middle part of the bone and not directly above the ankle or right below the knee. If it’s one of those, he won’t even be putting weight on it for months.
So we’ve got some people here who think he’ll be back in a month, and some people who seem to think this marks the end of his career in baseball. I’ll take “somewhere in between,” thanks.
I swear, Mariners’ fans are now the most bi-polar in baseball (though the manic phases, as extreme as they are, are almost vanishingly short compared to the depressed phases).
I hate to bring this up but…does this mean/indicate that Trunifel might be “fragile” or “injury-prone” a la Doyle? Or could it cause him to become that way, having such a serious injury at such a young age?
I don’t think it indicates anything (yet) except maybe he’s unlucky.
BTW, according to Drayer
I am not a doctor, so I don’t know if that’s better or worse or what it might mean.
Well there goes the gem of our farm system
According to ?
Baseball America has him ranked behind Halman and Saunders–89th overall.

Anyone read the M’s Site, it says he broke is Fibula, not Tibia, which if it is true is actually a lot better news as it may only be 6-8 weeks.
Baseball America’s ranking of the Mariners system is pretty far off in a lot of people’s view.

They said on the radio that he’d be out 3 weeks or so. Hopefully that was based on something other than a reporter making stuff up.
The scouts are pretty varied in opinion of Triunfel. The sources that the USSM has seem to be very keen on him. BA and BPro are less so. rankings too soon. Seems like the reasonable conclusion is that he’s hard to figure out. Some of the difference may have to do with the valuation of his skill set rather than the view of what skills he will have.
