Definitely not a good inning for the bullpen (the one we’ve kind of been expecting), but certainly infield defense, most notably Yuni’s lack of range at short on a pair of grounders, contributed.
We’ll see what they’re made of now.

Can we please give up on Sweeney? He’s late on just about every pitch he has seen this year.

Alright. So I got myself some comfort food at the grocery store. Had some time to clear my head, put things in perspective, reflect. Woooooosaaaa…
First big bullpen meltdown had to happen sometime. Glad it took ’til the 10th game, and it’s also encouraging to see it happen in the last of a three game set instead of the first, second, and third games of a three game set. Obviously Adair and Wak need to intervene and get these guys to vary pitches a lot more. It doesn’t take more than an inning or two, at best, for a guy to figure out that’s all you’re going to throw him. See: Putz before he went on the DL last year. Avoiding his killer splitter like grim death for some reason.

Also, since we haven’t really been down by more than two runs all season until now, I’d like to point out how nice it is to feel like a comeback in this situation, while unlikely, is entirely possible. That feels good.
Is anyone seeing more patience out of Lopez? Seems like he is developing at a faster rate in this regard then Yuni. Perhaps Lopez has a 50-60 walk season in store for him this year which would be somewhat encouraging.
Somebody should tell the Mariners that we need Saunders OUT of the game. Work the freakin’ count. Five…yeah, FIVE pitches in the sixth. 10 in the seventh.

hard to figure out why Sean White has not been able to stick at this level. He has a nice little arsenal with a 92-94 fastball that appears to have a little sink and run. It appears to that he has some ability to miss bats as well.. what gives?

The “Hello Safeco Field” radio spots are beyond stupid, beyond annoying, beyond stupidly annoying, beyond comprehension that someone got paid to make them.

As much as I want to complain about the bullpen blowing up, we all know it was due.
Might as well do it on the game where we only get 3 hits and probably won’t win anyways…
A series split, sweep and win to start the season. Two of which were against division rivals. I’ll take it anytime.
All five runs can be traced to one 0-2 fastball right down the center from Corky. Not only is that one pitch a disaster, but add to it the fact that the previous dozen or so pitches he threw were similarly located fastballs. Joke.
The bullpen can’t be the best every single day and the guys need to show some more plate discipline to get Saunders out of there much earlier. He could have easily been out of there an inning earlier if it weren’t for that 5 pitch sixth.
So some bad stuff happened. It wasn’t the total implosion that we quickly became accustom to last season, so I guess that’s good. You know what they say; lowered expectations breed satisfactory results.
Yeah, anybody could see that he should have brought Batista in from the bullpen, rather than Corky.
Pretty much everybody in the bullpen, at one time or another this past week. In Aardsma’s case, I think that was all he threw. They’ve just been getting away with it. Until now.
You realize that’s an analysis for fantasy baseball, which is kind of like using “Grey’s Anatomy” as a way of evaluating Seattle area physicians? Ok, maybe that’s a bit harsh… fantasy does use real players. But it discounts some things that matter and over-values some things that don’t. Moreover, that analysis — such as it is — is a month out of date.
If you want to have a look at how relief staffs have done so far this year, Frangraphs is a good place to start (sort by FIP). Of course it’s way early still. Fangraphs also has projections (using various systems) for individual players but unfortunately they don’t (AFAIK) compile them for teams (which would get especially complicated for a relief corps anyway, since you have to estimate how many innings each player would get vs the others and the starters).
Hmmmmmm, interesting comments above. I agree, our hitters need to be more patient at the plate. I read an interview from Wak, and he mentioned that getting the team to learn to how draw more walks, is one of his main concerns.
Hopefully they’ll learn sooner than later.
