Welcome to Seattle, Steven

We told you guys this was happening – the M’s cut a pre-draft deal with Baron last week. He’s going to sign for below slot, as on talent, he’s more in the 50-100 range.

In case you’ve forgotten, Baron’s a catcher with great defensive tools and a questionable bat. The M’s think there’s more offense in there, and he could be a Yadier Molina type long term. I know, it’s not that exciting, especially considering some of the names that were on the board, but this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. We knew this was coming.

Will be interesting to see what the M’s do at #51 now. They’ve saved money at both #27 and #33, so I’d expect them to be aggressive with their next two picks.

They should sign this kid ASAP. At the rate this team has been going through catchers, he could be backing up Moore at Safeco in just a few weeks….

Whats the reasoning that makes Baron the best selection for the Ms at #33? Yes, we knew it was coming. But how is this a good pick again? Thanks.

Dave laid it out here. It’s a little complicated, but it looks to describe exactly what Zduriencik & Co are doing.

Tanner Scheppers, RHP (St. Paul Saints)
Is there any reason other than money he wasn’t a better pickat this slot?

Most likely Baron is still on he board with the next pick.
Scheppers obviously wouldn’t last. Why pass?

So does this mean that Franklin might be an expensive to sign guy?

Yes, but Franklin didn’t fall out of slot. Scheppers was available for Ms. Why not him?

Easy answer; Scheppers is an injury risk and is asking way too much money. That the Rangers took him is a testament to the risks they’re willing to take at the expense of their owner’s money.

Let’s put it this way, if you really thought the draft order would have been…

    2 – Ackley
    27 – Poythress
    33 – Franklin
    51 or 82 – Baron

…then you don’t understand anything. First, there’s no guarantee the draft order still goes that way insofar as we may not still have had Franklin at 33 or Baron at 51. Second, by taking a guy like Poythress in the second round, he’s almost assured to be cheaper than he would have been at 27. I doubt highly that Franklin goes over or makes slot at 27. Baron sure as heck wont.

The Mariners are being frugal but at the same time drafting smart.

I saw Baron play against Coral in early february, and if you look at the box score, it says they stole 4 bases in 5 attempts. This is very misleading though. 1. The MIF were no where near correct position to get the kids out and 2. Coral springs has some damn good athletes.

I was VERY impressed with what I saw though, If they can fix the timing, hes going to be a guy mariner fans like, a lot. And hes a good kid too, not that its a great reason to draft him, but it doesnt hurt.

Dave, you have become a homer 🙂

I don’t understand how you can like Franklin and Barron in the first/sandwich rounds.

Franklin has a low ceiling and screams Willie Bloomquist version 2. No power, ok defense, not expected to hit for a high average. I would like him if he was in round 3-4.

Barron as you have mentioned is more like a 2-3+ round guy.

Just don’t understand the logic on wasting early round pick on guys that at best may be career bench players.

M’s need starting pitching and they pass on Scheppers?

I know you like Jack but his picks thus far are dissappointing.

By the same token, Ms need middle infielders. They got EXACTLY what they needed, passing up a pitcher who had a questionable medical history.

So they select a middle infielder with Bloomquist as a comp. In round 1 I would rather see a higher ceiling player even if higher risk.
