Game 62, Mariners and Rockies vs. Mother Nature
Mike Snow · June 13, 2009 at 5:19 pm · Filed Under Mariners
Morrow’s reconversion to starting begins, according to the National Weather Service, in a tornado watch. Also, in the National League park, now Griffey is back out in the field. In windy conditions and the big Colorado outfield, I can only imagine the potential for misadventures out there.
Morrow v. Marquis, whenever it starts. Update: Supposed to start at 5:50
RF-L Ichiro
1B-L Branyan
3B-R Beltre
DH-L Griffey
2B-R Lopez
SS-R Betancourt
C-R Burke
CF/LF-R Gutierrez
P-R Morrow

I know I’m a bit late to the game thread, but I was out driving when I heard Mr. Morrow walk a guy with the bases loaded to force in a run.
Man, sure is a good thing they sent Brandon down to Tacoma to make sure he’s got his command.
Anyway, only 1-0 Rockies when he was done in the third, so the damage seemed to be contained by the time he got out of there. Sure, the only thing that might be shaken is his confidence, which has taken a blow lately in the bullpen… but really, that’s not that..
…what’s that you say? The run was scored because he’d walked 2 guys to load the bases? And he forced in the run by walking a National League pitcher? After trying to throw fastballs for strikes?
…oh dear.
J-LO!!!
YESSSS!!! Ha! J. Lo!
That works.
Sims is out of his mind.
“HE’S SO CLUTCH!”
and to the cascade of boos, “LISTEN TO ALL THOSE MARINERS’ FANS!”
That thin air is lethal to pitchers.
Clutch!!! 😉
“probably a better idea if Mark plants his feet to make a strong through to first” – from our brilliant TV color commentators.
Really, you think? I wonder if Lowe has reached that conclusion all by himself…
How appropriate. High high, low low, up in the Rocky Mountains.
Time to strike out the side.
If Ichiro! weren’t so selfish, he would have made an error on that play so that Mark Lowe’s ERA wouldn’t have gone up.
(Would it have gone up, if Lowe had gotten out of the rest of the inning with two strikeouts and some other kinda out? Are they smart enough to realize it would have been a sac-fly?)
Boy, I hope Lowe hasn’t been watching video from Game 5 of the Tigers-Cards 2006 World Series on how not to field your position if you’re a pitcher.
The M’s fangraphs hurts my heart right now.
I believe they scored it fielder’s choice E1. Is it an earned run?
Well, there are a couple of our fellow posters from Colorado who might be at the game tonight…maybe he was referring to them making all that noise. 😉
Oh yeah. Well, now that he walked the bases loaded, it is.
I believe, unforunately, he is in his mind.
Does anyone else find that they are annoyed by how much Sims’ pronunciation of Frankie’s last name annoys them?
SWEENEY SWEENEY SWEEEEEENEY.
How is Gutierrez supposed to be pronounced?
Probably how he pronounces it.
I’ve started perving Sims’ play by play and it makes it more entertaining.
He said, “Here’s a big pitch” and I heard, “Here’s a big bitch.” It did make me look up. How dare he call Branyan a big bitch.
Yeah, it’s been discussed. It’s probably proper, but it’s definitely an annoying affectation since he doesn’t attempt it with other Spanish names.
Why does anyone pitch Branyan fastballs is a mystery.
Oh, Sorry. I read the threads pretty religiously, but I guess I missed that one :/. Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone, though.
No problem It’s annoyed me since day one.
Nice to see Red out there representing his Beltre love in CO…
He doesn’t pronounce Gutierrez properly either. He pronounces it Goo tee EH rrez. It is supposed to be pronounced Goo TEE EH rrez -all in one syllable.
I have about a quarter inch of hair on my head and I tried to pull it out knowing that Endy was going up there to bunt.
Seriously. That sucks!
I guess I’ve never paid that much attention to Rockies baseball… What the hell is that freakish mascot they have in the stands?
Why the hell Wak was having Endy bunt with two outs is beyond me. I guess if he was 100% confident he could beat it out for a single, cool…but that’s still rolling the dice.
I assumed it was Endy’s choice…
I guess bquote is failing for me like the lineup is these days…
We now have the same record as the Rockies.
I guess the moral of this story is that defense matters. I am not clear how Lowe winds up with zero earned runs.

Just took a gander at their website…his name is “Dinger” and, apparently, he’s supposed to a dinosaur or something.
Right… makes sense… cause the Colorado Rockies and Dinosaurs go together like salmon and dr. pepper…
So does that mean Carl Everett doesn’t believe in him?
I was thinking that, too…but there’s a park along the Utah-Colorado state line to the northwest of Denver called Dinosaur National Monument, where some Jurassic-Era fossil beds are located.
Ancient, er make that preshistoric, connection…but I guess it works for the Rox.
Probably not…though I’ll betcha plenty of kids around Denver love old (and I mean REALLY OLD!) Dinger. 🙂
Someone mentioned Beltre having a good game…he’s actually been on fire for awhile now (he’s on my fantasy baseball team and killed me the first 2 months) but has been ridiculous in June, batting .405, OBP .450, SLG .568 and OPSing 1.018.
Good to see his bat back in the lineup.
Oh, one other thing I just saw and was astonished by. Ichiro! has played in 53 games this year and has gone without a hit just 5 times and, as I’m sure has been reported, the last time the Mariners played and Ichiro didn’t reach base was the first game of a double header on April 28th.
Throw in Branyan continuing to crush the ball, and you have to wonder if we could get even league average hitting from our DH, SS, and C positions what kind of position would the M’s be in?
That’s Dinger. She’s a triceratops, actually. When they were building Coors they found dinoaur eggs right where the stadium is sitting. So, the dinosaur mascot was born.
Mark “Colorado Mariner fan in exile” was at the game last night and I’m going today. Too bad we don’t have Red’s giant Beltre head here.
The tornado warnings were for all around Denver. It sounds like it wasn’t all that bad at Coors, though. Today is looking good; clear skys and a few clouds. I can see downtown Denver from my porch and it all looks good.
Yeah, there was a graphic about that during the game — Ichiro has reached based in 42 straight games (I think that was the number) which was a record for him and the M’s.
I missed this earlier, but Shannon Drayer posted this on her blog during the “rain” (aka thunderstorm / tornado ) delay before the game. It qualifies as one of the funniest things I’ve ever read from a member of the “real” media:
Galaxieboi –
Wow! I figured that had something to do with all the fossils found in Colorado, but I never knew they actually found any right under the site where they built Coors.
Very interesting…thanks!
