Game 93, Mariners at Tigers
So the Mariners are going up against rookie right-hander Rick Porcello, who has struggled a bit with his command this year. What’s that you say? Didn’t he beat the Mariners anyway earlier in the year?
April 19th @ Seattle: 7.0 IP, 5 H (HR), R, 3/0 K/BB, 11/7 G/F
And he’s only become a more extreme groundball pitcher in the past few months? And the Tigers plan on running out an infield of Inge-Everett-Polanco-Cabrera? Shoot.
Lineup:
RF Ichiro!
1B Branyan
2B Lopez
DH Griffey
CF Gutierrez
LF Langerhans
C Johjima
3B Hannahan
SS Cedeno
Rangers, Angels, why couldn’t you two have lost more games recently?
Edit: cdowley in the comments reminds me that reports earlier in the day said that Josh Wilson will be designated for assignment to make way for Mike Sweeney. We’re keeping Shelton around, it seems.

Buh-bye, Wlad.
This was almost exactly like the June 23rd game against the Padres. Olsen starts, Mariners down huge (that game 9-1). Mariners come back with a couple timely home runs and eventually bring the tieing run to second base in the ninth with 1 out, only to lose it 9-7.
So…we’re five back and Guti is out at least a few games. Sell baby, sell.
Guti getting hurt today further illustrates why we either need to keep Wlad or acquire another outfielder if we trade him, and no, Griffey in left is not a viable option.
Good to hear it sounds like it was a minor injury, from all accounts it sounds like it was a brutal encounter.
All is well because tomorrow is Felix Day!!!! and the Wash goes Thursday so lets hope the M’s can get out of the hood with a series victory and Guti can get back quickly!
Why does no one ever mention the Everett Odor? (Just north of the city and south of Smokey Point, coming from that slough where the boat dealership is).
Also: Kansas City is repaying us for the Betancourt trade by rolling over for the Angels. I’m not sure they could’ve done otherwise, but that’s how it feels.
Rolled over twice it appears, plus Texas looks to be winning and Oakland is tied in the who-cares series with Minnesota. I think I’ll go to bed before anything else can depress me.
Dave,
Are we at a point to write the season off and start selling? Your respected opinion would be greatly appreciated on this matter. 5.5 games back from first place and 6 games out of the wild card 10 days before the trade deadline seem to me like we should be sellers only. Isn’t today the day to write the season off? I know that Dave usually writes a post when he thinks that the season is done, so I am thinking that the post may be coming soon.
Ok stupid question from the new guy…
How do you copy and paste someone elses post and get the blue line to appear?
Use the “bquote” button. Either press it once then paste your quote and paste it again, or paste, highlight and press the button once.
Use the bquote button.
Sorry, “press it again”, not “paste it again.” We used to have an edit function here . . .
I played with that button just not well enough I guess lol
Thank you much
OK, tell me I’m crazy. Hannahan hits two homers. Then we hear that Wak and Cockrell spent 45 minutes with him in the cage prior to the game. And this is just a few weeks after trading for him. Did he just need some mechanical adjustment to his swing? Did Mariners know this all along? Before the trade? Are his scouts really that talented? Is GMZ really that smart?
Maybe it’s just a coincidence. Like Rob Johnson hitting that one shot a few weeks ago.
I think today is the day that tells Z that we need to sell. With the Angles taking both games of the double header, and us losing, that puts us to 5.5 back. Not looking good.
SELL Z, SELL!
jordan, you’re kidding, right?
We go into Detroit, against a pitcher who beat us 8-2 earlier this year, with our oh-so-awesome member of the Olson triplets pitching, and damn near stage a terrific comeback, so now we’re done?
I SURE don’t want whatever you’re verbing. People were saying the same thing when we dropped the first game in Cleveland. It’s. One. Game.
That said, if it’s. Several. Games. Well, that could be different. But don’t get crazy.
Just for reference: Beane dealt Harden on July 8 last year when the A’s were five games behind the Angels and just 3.5 games out in the wild card (behind Boston and the Twins, and one game ahead of the Yankees), but he had a lot of injured regulars at that point and clearly decided that the A’s wouldn’t be able to sustain its position, let alone climb ahead of those clubs. I still think he didn’t get as much for Harden as he should have, but Harden did have a history of fragility…just like, say, Bedard.
Just a reminder: this is the non-waiver deadline. The playoff roster deadline is a month later.
May 26th 1995 was my 10th birthday. I saw Griffey break his wrist, in box seats, on my birthday. Guess what kid, turns out your hero is mortal after all. Turned out to be one of the best years in the franchise’s history and we all remember the smile on Griffey’s face at the bottom of that dogpile.
I feel like people in Seattle have become so accustomed to losing that they forget what a playoff stretch run feels like. Snap out of it. There is a chance to improve this team drastically. Right now. I don’t care about next year. I want something to cheer for right now. Make the trade.
In regards to the Beane trade of Harden when they were still close, Beane is doing things under a whole different set of rules than JZ is. Beane can’t afford to take any chances because of his lack of mulla. If it’s not incredibly likely that the A’s make the playoffs, he’s got to sell and get as much talent back as he can. Even the top draft pick compensation to some extent aren’t as valuable to him as he then has to pay top draft pick dollars for several pre-second round or third round picks. Money, he tends to not have. Plus the inevitable fact that drafted players are usually further off from the bigs than what traded players can often be and he tends to need the players he gets to be ready sooner rather than later.
JZ on the other hand has plenty of money to play with (next year especially). So he can afford to take a chance and not have it ruin the next couple years because he’s not just dependent on his farm system sustaining the team.
That being said, the M’s chances are pretty slim right now. But at the same time with RRS coming back up replacing the recently “automatic loss Olson”, the M’s could easily get hot the next 9 days and jump right back in it.
As such, I don’t mind if they wait until right to the deadline to actually make a deal either way (it’s only about 9 days to wait after all). And nobody will want Bedard right now anyways. If he can have two very strong starts between now and then, he might actually have some value. Washburn currently has some value, but not as much as most fans seem to think. Russel Branyan probably has some value, but hurt a bit by his, on the surface, “slump” recently. Plus, he’s made it clear he’d like to come back here and is willing to take a pay cut from what he’d get elsewhere to do it, and I’m guessing the M’s wouldn’t mind having him back (assuming nobody makes a great offer for him of course). Beyond that, you have Aardsma that probably has some decent value… then who? You might be able to trick someone into giving you real value for Lowe I suppose… Other than that, the team doesn’t have anyone that would jump out at you that they’d be willing to trade that would return real value. So waiting 9 days won’t hurt any trade JZ makes or diminish the returned value (barring injuries of course), but it might just see the M’s jump back into it if he doesn’t “sell sell sell”.
I’m content to be patient for 9 days and I trust JZ will make the right moves either way when the time comes. For once, it’s great approaching a trade deadline and having complete faith that whatever the M’s GM does, it’s going to be good. 🙂
How much of a winning percentage do you “sellers” want until you become buyers?
A couple of facts to ponder:
current winning percentage is .527, an obviously pleasant surprise
69 games left to play, that’s a lot
