Game 103, Mariners at Rangers
Vargas vs. Padilla, 5:05 pm PDT
It looks like the other “major” announcement of the deadline is that RHP Ian Snell is due up in the rotation after Felix, which would put him on pace to start for the USSM/LL gathering at Safeco on August 8th. After Snell, we’ll have Hyphen again and then either French or Olson.
The lesser thing that was not “announced” exactly but is good news no less is that Branyan is back in the lineup, having not played since the 25th. Gutierrez continues to bat second while Branyan moves to third.
Lineup:
RF Ichiro!
CF Gutierrez
1B Branyan
2B Lopez
DH Griffey
C Johjima
SS Wilson
3B Hannahan
LF Saunders

Can we play Lang anytime soon? Saunders is good defensively but he can’t hit the side of a barn
Hey look, it’s the white flag of surrender, on the mound for the Mariners!
Nah, Wak is just being careful in case of lightning strikes.
USSM guys, this may be worthy of a longer post by one of you, but what do the M’s do with Bedard? With him on the DL, I bet he’d slip through revocable waivers in early august, which would allow him to be traded to any team in august. a team could claim him, but then the M’s could conceivably dump Bedard (and his remaining salary) on that team if they didn’t think Bedard would pitch again. I think this possibility would scare teams off of claiming him early in the month. If someone claims him, the M’s could dump, trade, or keep him. If he clears waivers, then he could be traded to any team, albeit only for players who are not on a 40-man roster (unless that player has cleared waivers). The M’s could also keep him a start or two on the off chance they go on a crazy run to peak at the playoffs. and if he’s healthy for 1 or 2 starts, I could still see the M’s getting more for him than just a comp pick, especially if a team gets desperate or has an injury.
Just a thought. But the sooner they stick Bedard on waivers, the better, because once he is healthy I highly doubt he’d make it through waivers, which would limit the options.
My message – stick Bedard on Revocable waivers as soon as is allowed!
There may be dual no-hitters where a hit came in the 9th, I don’t know. But only once has there been dual no-hitters lasting through the ninth. Hippo Vaughn — one of the all-time great baseball names — was the hard-luck loser. I normally wouldn’t copy and paste a big chunk from Wikipedia, but since we’re in a rain delay:
I was thinking of that Harvey Haddix “almost” perfect game, too…so I was curious what the other starter did in that game. Interstingly, Lew Burdette pitched a 12-hit shutout for the Braves in that game…but also lasted all 13 innings as well.
Possibly because it was so far back, B-R doesn’t list the number of pitches thrown by either of those guys. One can only imagine how many…
angels just scored 6 runs in the top half of the 11th vs the Twinkies. I long for the day when the Mariners score 6 runs in a game….
I long for the day when we can beat the Texas Rangers in Arlington. . .
Baker says game resume @ 9:15
Whew White got out of it even though Branyan f-d up there on the popout.
I’d given up! Thank you, guys, for letting me know.
On the radio, it sounds like there can’t be more than one or two thousand people left at the game, if that… can the TV viewers confirm this?
Touch the bag you little leaguer! Ughh sorry… And heres Sweeney to save the day.
Choices: Sweeney, Shelton
Wak chooses: Sweeney. Predictable.
They sound pretty loud on TV, but there seems to be a lot of empty seats.
A pitch hitter at last, and it’s Sweeney.
Sweeney, lol.
Oh no, our one game win record has taken a hit!
Oh, Wak. Use your head for once and scrap your blind loyalty to those washed up choke artists.
1) With tying run on 2nd, leaves Griffey in to hit vs. LHP who has significantly more trouble vs. RHB
2) Sweeney pinch-hits instead of Shelton.
one *run* win record….. sorry *run* is what I meant
IF ONLY we could win in Texas. . .
I hate when we’re in Texas. That ballpark is an absolute JOKE (plays like Coors Field pre-humidor).. their fans boo like hell with ANY call against them no matter how correct.. and the weather is craptastic.
