Game 147, White Sox at Mariners

Well, this should be interesting. With a lefty on the hill, Wak goes to his anti-LHP line-up that features Lopez at first base, but instead of Hall replacing him at second base, we get our first look at Matt Tuiasosopo, Second Baseman. He played a lot of second base in Tacoma after returning from the disabled list, with reports ranging from “he’s worked really hard and its paying off” to “he’s worked really hard and he’s still awful”. Everyone agrees that he’s put in the effort, but he had a long way to go, so he could make big strides and still be pretty rough. It will be interesting to see how he handles the adjustment at the big league level.

From Wak’s pre-game comments, it sounds like they’re not expecting much either. In other words, don’t read too much into this – it’s pretty unlikely that Tui ends up at second base long term, and especially not for a club that values defense as much as the current administration does.

Adam Moore makes his major league debut behind the plate, too. Also, Morrow pitching. The White Sox offense isn’t good, and especially lacks good LH hitters, so this is about as good a matchup as he’s ever going to get. I’m already not overly optimistic about his future, but maybe he can open some eyes today.

    There’s a sick, sick, sick part of me that wants to see Silva come into the game.

    I think he will be next up after Shawn Kelley, Luke French can going multiple innings so they’ll probably save him for last.

    Silva would probably demand that Johnson come in as his personal catcher.

    Oh good, the fan who was screaming, Ichiro, Ichiro all during Hall’s at bat last inning finally gets his wish.

    Okay, we have a runner in scoring position and the best hitter in baseball history is up with the threat of Carlos Silva coming in next inning. This has to end well.

    I like how Ichiro ran out to center. Also that he acknowledged the crowd afterwards.

    Ichiro! knocks in “DTEI” Langerhans and Sweeney runs pell mell for the ice cream machine. What a great ending to an epic confrontation!

    Now, I can concentrate fully on the Mavericks in the first championship game.

    Silva has complained about Ichiro selfishly ending the game before Burger Chef could get his work in.

    I tried to post this shortly after the first inning but kept getting a system time out. Not sure if anyone will read it now. oh well.

    *note – this is not a criticism*

    I noticed since Ichiro has hit his 200 Hit, he’s unintentionally walked 3 times in 3 games, vs. 12 times in 128 previous games this season. I’m starting to believe that, like hitting for power, Ichiro can walk more if he wants to. I suspect though, that like hitting for power, more walks for him will mean more SO. Whether or not that would improve or reduce his OBP or not I’m not sure. My suspicion is that Ichiro knows what he’s doing. Bottom line, I’d much rather watch him hit line drives and get infield hits than take more free passes and SO more.

    Well, Dirk, the obvious response is SSS, but I’ll offer the hypothesis that Ichiro!, like every other half-decent major-league batter, will play away from his known tendencies, just to keep pitchers honest and perhaps make them throw fewer pitches a foot outside or at his ankles. Remember how Edgar would look at the first pitch for nine straight PA, then drill a double off the wall in the tenth one because the dude thought it was safe to groove a 91 mph fastball down the middle… same thing.

    Only one game and all that, but Tui sure didn’t embarrass himself at 2B.
