Game 148, Yankees at Mariners

Happy Felix Day!
Over the last few weeks, various people have written in to request a post on Felix’s chances of winning the Cy Young. Here’s the very short version – he shouldn’t get a single first place vote. Zack Greinke has been the best pitcher in the American League, and it’s not even close. Felix has been good – Greinke has been great.
I love Felix, but he’s not the Cy Young winner this year. Not with what Greinke is doing in KC.

That’s sweet.
“I thought the media would be all over me.” I love Ichiro! quotes!!
What’s gotten into Ichiro?
First, that was the hugest home run I’ve ever seen him hit.
Second, I swear I’ve saw him spit in the dugout.
Third, the fist pumps in the air before entering the dugout? I don’t think I’ve ever seen him that stoked.
And Felix wins? Hell yeah!
Ah shit, Sweeney for the post-game chat.
Q: How do you keep Ichiro! safe from pranks after a game?
A: Interview Sweeney.
…
that worked
I’m pacing around the house. Haven’t done that in years.
A less selfish player would have only hit a double.
Ichibomb for the win!
OMG, OMG, OMG!!!Felix will win Cy Young!!! OMG!!! Ichiro is GOD!!!
Holy Freaking Ichiro!!! That has to be one of my favorite games of the year!
Shannon was trying to talk to Ichiro on the radio side, and first Jr ran past, then the bullpen all had to give him congrats, and then Sweeney had to give him an ice-creamy hug after his FSN interview, and the Jr ice-cream pie.
Oh, and I said it last night and I’ll say it again – I’ve never seen Ichi so animated and happy… I don’t believe there’s anything he can’t do right now. We’re damn lucky to have him!
I hope that this statement is taken in the spirit of respect for both men, but it seems like the franchise torch was just passed from Ken Griffey to Ichiro Suzuki in that one moment.
That hit was so much like a magical shot in the Kingdome in the old days. I feel that same adrenalin and excitement in a whole new way. It took Ichiro! a long time, but he earned it.
Games like this remind me of how it used to be, and how much fun it was.
Hopefully we’ll get there again soon.
FWIW, I think the change in Ichiro has a lot to do with Jr, and possibly to a lesser extent Sweeney.
Not according to Sweeney. It’s Griffey’s team and ‘they’ are doing everything they can to get him to stay.
Talk about taking the buzz off with a post-game interview.
First, who says you’re going to be around next year to hold that door open, Sweeney? And second, why in the world would it be a good thing for either of you to be around?
Crazy.
Sweeney has been doing a PR campaign all season that assumes that everyone on the team at any one point in time must remain. When you’re the 25th man, anyone who leaves was better than you.
@juneau_fan:
It’s pretty clear that the players love Sweeney & Jr. It’s the FOs job to see through that and do whatever makes the team better, even if it POs the team.
Should be an interesting offseason.
BTW, Kreuger is now saying it’s between CC and Felix for the Cy Young. What a moran.
Jeez, what stupidity. Over at the LoHud Yankee’s game thread, they are ripping Girardi for giving Ichiro an IBB with first base open.
Putting the winning run on base without making him swing the bat is pretty stupid. Putting a speedster like Ichiro on base would be stupider. And as good a player as Ichiro is, it’s not like he has 40hr’s.
I say they go ahead and bring Griffey back next year as the Designated Ichiro Tickler… If he can have such a positive effect on Ichi, I don’t care if he wastes a roster space.
JerBear, I tend to agree. I’m sure that annoys Derek & Dave to no end 🙂
Are you sure, he was giving it to Greinke before the game.
Ichiro with a dramatic, game-wining homerun off of future Hall-of-Famer Mariano Rivera to beat the Yankees.
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!
Enjoying at the bar, so a bit late to the party…but yes, as Niehaus might put it, the finish was “just indescribable”. 🙂
I like this “Ichiro” fellow!
I love it when Ichiro flirts with the women
Moron.
Love the call back! 0 walk-off hits before this year, 3 this season. Think it works the way Jr.’s shot on August 12th, 1995 works? 10 games in 10 days?? Alright, I’m gonna wake up now…
*edit August 24th…
