Game 16, Mariners at Oakland

Felix! Against Blanton, who is not Felix. Heh heh heh. Supposed 7:05 start time.

No lineups up yet that I’ve found, so I’m going ahead with my

I know generally speaking my view of the AL West (and Dave’s, which is different but substantially similar) isn’t at all widely held, but the season series against the A’s is almost certainly going to be as important as their success against the Angels. It’s going to be much harder to win a division title if they drop games to either of those two.

So win. Having Felix start is a good way to begin.

I look forward to hearing McLaren lectured in the post-game press conference about it being too early to make changes, much less panic (PANICCCC!!)

The Orioles field:

1B-R Millar
DH-L Huff
LF-L Scott
C-R Hernandez
CF-R Jones

Random side note: all this talk of Panic made me really want to go run Future Crew’s Panic demo, which was amazingly sweet for the time and had great music (like almost all their demos). Won’t run, though. Update: yay for comments! It’s on YouTube which is not nearly as cool as actually running it, but still cool. Watching this and marveling at how awesome it is for how bad the computers were (and no graphics acceleration!) makes me feel really old.

Jason Jennings v Carlos Silva

I’ve said before we’d learn a lot about this year’s Mariners in the first month or so, and here’s two of the big questions: is Carlos Silva the pitch-to-contact pitcher we’ve seen in his career, or is he the middle-rotation pillar of support the M’s think they signed? And will the M’s defensive holes hobble him?

Fun comparison:
Jennings: lifetime big groundball pitcher (1.38 G/F), projections ran ~6K/9, 3.75 BB/9, 1 HR/9
Silva: even bigger groundball pitcher (1.55 G/F), projections run ~4K/9, 2 BB/9, 1.2 HR/9

Jennings signed for one year, $4m.

Lineups when we get them. Wait, no… I’m going to go out on a limb here and post them before I see them. Let’s see how far off they are.

2B-R Kinsler

Hernandez vs Padilla, 7:05 pm.

Every night, baseball has the chance to entertain, to bring joy, and make us all happy, even if we don’t have anything to do with the game on the field. On certain nights, however, baseball possesses the ability to also be magical – to give us a memory that we’ll never forget, a story we can tell our grandkids, and an experience that will go down as one of the best of our lives.

Every single time Felix Hernandez takes the hill, that potential magic comes alive. It’s not just a baseball game, but instead, a chance to watch our 21-year-old Venezuelan phenom make history. There’s no ceiling for Felix – he literally could strike out all 27 batters he faced and I’d just say “yep, that’s Felix.”

It’s not just another day – it’s Felix Day. Happy Felix Day.

Against the Cubbies! Again! FSN! In a couple of minutes! If there are any regulars in after the 4th inning, I understand they’ll be giving free beers to everyone in attendance.

A game! On TV and everything!

King Felix Day to end the year! 1:05 (which means 1:10), KSTW.

Jones plays! Morse plays! Burke plays!

Texas respects the season by playing an even worse lineup than we’ve seen.

Apologies – I was off helping a friend work on his house, and didn’t get back until now. What’d I miss?

5-1 in the 9th? Wow. Go M’s.

Aaand it’s over. Well. Sorry folks, I blew that.

Volquez v Weaver. Fortunately, the Rangers aren’t very good.

M’s run out Clement at DH again, because… I don’t even know. The 1B is Morse. Jones continues to be punished for God knows what. You stink, McLaren, extension or no extension.

Hey, let’s play an end-of-season would-you-swap-em, then…. Mayybe, yup, yup, nope but maybe… nahh, no way, sure, no, why not.
