Odalis Perez

He’s still out there. I’m just sayin’.

Seriously, I like this guy. Left-handed, just 27, very low walk rates, and he’s been pretty durable the past three seasons since getting a full-time starter gig (32, 30 and 31 starts per year). His strikeout rate took a dip last year, but the rest of his numbers were still solid across the board. VORP pegged him as the 18th best pitcher in baseball last season; the only free agents ahead of him were Carl Pavano, Pedro Martinez and a guy named Clemens.

He’s younger than Pavano and has been a better pitcher longer. The only difference is that Pavano sports a nice 18-8 record from last season, while Perez was a mere 7-6; their other numbers were pretty darned similar. With Moyer a FA after next season — and perhaps done as pitcher, anyway — it’d sure be nice to have Perez under contract the next three or four years as the rotation’s southpaw.

You can choose how much you believe this or not, but ESPN.com’s rumors suggest he’ll be in the market for a three-year deal worth between $6-7M per season. That seems plenty fair to me.

#45, I know nothing about most legal issues, but I’m pretty sure there actually has to be a contract with ink on it for any legal ramifications about “breach of contract” to exist.

I’ve been saying for weeks now Odalis Perez and Renteria should be their targets in FA, not loading up on 1B/DH types.

I can understand Perez, but Renteria? Can you sy “dead last in the AL in HRs once again”, boys and girls? If you’re going to totally punt offense and go with an IF with a craptastic 1B/2B/3B and adequate if not good LF and DH, why not get someone like Pokey Reese for cheap?

Renteria?!? Ugh. $10 million dollars?!? Is this one of those completely overpaid middle-tier players we discussed on the “The Market” thread? Somebody’s going to have to ‘splain to me how a guy who is not particularly good defensively, who has slugged above .439 just ONCE in about 7 big league seasons, and who has really had just one great season (his Age 27 year, 2003) is worth $10 million.

re: #52, I didn’t think Renteria was really that bad defensively and I say that from watching a lot of Cards games last year in the reg season. I didn’t think the Ms defense up the middle was all that great, to be honest. I’d rather have Renteria than, say, Orlando Cabrera, who in my cynical heart of hearts is probably a good bet to become a Mariner next year.

No doubt $10 mil is a ripoff, is it as bad as paying $48 mil over 4 years to Richie freakin’ Sexson and then sticking him in left field?

Re # 48: “These are sophisticated people negotiating the contracts and you wouldn’t see an error as egregious as “forgetting” to make the offer tentative, pending…”
    Really?
You must have forgotten what happened in ’96, when four–count ’em, four–clubs (front offices) neglected to follow the CBA rules, and failed to offer contracts to their draftes within fifteen days. Those draftees were no longer the sole property of the drafting team, and they became free agents.
[TRAVIS LEE, the # 2 pick in the draft (Minn.), signed with Arizona for $10 million. The player drafted before him, KRIS BENSON (Pitt.), got a $2 million bonus.]
That error sounds egregious to me.

If we got Beltre and Delgado (or Beltre and Sexson), would we still be able to sighn Odalis Perez? He sounds pretty good, considering the pitchers that are still out there are out of our reach.

Check his splits. OP is tough against lefties, particularly lefty power bats. Although I am in favor of signing Clement, Perez is the best fit of the remaining available pitching FAs.

I would be very surprised to see him go for $6-7M/yr for 3yrs. What is the rationale?

    Millwood Millwood Millwood!

If you say his name three times he’ll appear in our rotation. Right?

    M’s rotation!

    SP – Moyer
    SP – Madritsch
    SP – Meche
    SP – Millwood
SP – Mateo (or maybe we can get Perez to change his name to something starting with an M)

I do think Franklin should go back to the bullpen and teach Shiggy how to speak more Oklahoman.

Oh, yeah. Well, Piniero can become long relief. Or he can switch his name to start with an M too.

AP: Sexson gets a $6 million signing bonus, $4.5 million next season, $11.5 million in 2006 and $14 million in each of the final two seasons.

This would allow seattle major flexibility so sign other players, especially to similar deals. Beltre and a SP (Perez would be a great fit) can fit, even in one of Finnigan’s budgets!

  12. bilbo on December 15th, 2004 7:26 pm

BTW, why not go after Cabrera? Perhaps the thought of starting at SS and playing w/ his brother for a couple years would appeal to him?

  13. bob on December 15th, 2004 10:17 pm

The reason that he is still out there is due to the look of abject fear in his eyes when he took the mound in the playoffs and delivered 2 of the worst performances in playoff history. Unless he had heart surgery in the offseason and had one implanted, I don’t want him (neither does his old team, or Dodger fans).
