Peter and Jeff join

DMZ · February 1, 2005 at 9:36 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Hey, I’m happy to announce that for the first time in however long we’ve been doing this, U.S.S. Mariner has added new authors: Jeff Shaw and Peter White, who I hope you’ve been reading over at Mariner Musings, are now part of the crew. I think the timing couldn’t have been better for any of us, for complicated and mostly boring reasons except Jason’s thing, which he hasn’t said anything about.

I’m happy to have both of these guys, who I’ve read and enjoyed for at Mariner Musings and before that at San Shin, on board. I’ve been a long-time fan, and I think writing alongside with them will be even better.

Added by Dave:

Seriously, we’re really excited about Jeff and Peter bringing their talents to the blog. For those of you who haven’t read their work regularly, I think you’re going to find that you’ll be enjoying the site much more now with their contributions. Jeff and Peter are both great writers who bring a unique approach to the table, are consistently entertaining, and can make you laugh. They are also great guys, as I’ve had the pleasure to spend time with both, and I was as big a fan of their character as I was their writing. Having them come on board is a terrific thing for all involved, and I look forward to USSM becoming more entertaining than ever before.

Added by Jason: Ditto. No, really, we’re quite excited about this, and think it’ll serve everyone — us the writers and you the readers — better on all things Mariner.

Soon, all the blogs will merge into multi national conglomorates and then, when all the competition has been eliminated, they’ll jack up the subscription rates and take away our free services…

Wait, I’m thinking of cell phones. 😛

I just want to wish Jeff and Peter a warm welcome to the USSMariner crew! I’ve enjoyed Mariner Musings for quite a while now, so I can’t wait to see what you bring to this table. Congrats!!

I, er, can’t say anything yet. Soon, though.

Welcome aboard, fellows. (Duck as you leave the gangplank and enter the USS Mariner hatchway unless you want a nasty bump on your head.) I’ve been a big fan of Peter’s writings, and was proud to have him contribute to my Seattle Weekly article last year … and Jeff (and his lovely wife) is an old occasional drinking matey of mine from our Kitsap Newspaper Group days. Good fellows, and now, goodfellas in La Costra Marinostra. Good on you. You ho ho and a bottle of Anchor Steam …..

La Cosa Marinostra. Carp. CRAP. Too many bottles of Hefeweizen.

Welcome aboard Jeff and Peter. Anyone care to comment on Bill Krueger’s rumor mongering on FSN that his MLB say that it’s possible that Cameron might return next year and play center? Would Ibanez (please, perhaps packaged with Speizio and his absurb contract?) or Winn go in trade? How do you guys think that might work?

  9. DMZ on February 1st, 2005 10:28 pm

Well, first, Ibanez, Cameron, and Winn would form a superhero team that would travel around the country roughing up people who try to take nice, congratulatory comment threads off-topic.

Then they’ll play ro-sham-bo to see who gets to stay with the M’s.

why did clint nageotte get knocked all the way out?

  11. dw on February 1st, 2005 10:38 pm

Is this a merger, a takeover, or just part of the overall Stathead-Illuminati-Col. Sanders world domination syndicate sweeping across the baseball world?

As for me, I welcome our new blogging masters.

Fine, fine… I meant to add congratulations in the first one but I got off track and didn’t want to look like I was pulling a Corco.

I’ve been a lontime appreciator of the work of both Peter and Jeff, before he was on Musings and after. They’re both quick witted guys and I was a huge fan of the Senryu they did previously on the various players in the system. But the posts they did over there, regardless of subject matter, were well-reasoned and thoughtful, without coming across as critical, usually light-hearted, but never inane, and each one drew you in as a reader. Some blogs out there are excellent at giving you the facts or opinions, but not all of them can bring you as the observer in, much in the same vein as a great broadcaster will almost invite the listener in to share a story rather than giving the straight facts of it.

Peter and Jeff succeeded in making that kind of connection with the readers and should be a valuable asset on the USSM team.

    Please save me from myself.

So Derek needs to put you in the moderation queue like David J. Corcoran?

(Shoot, I’M worried about going there- I’m likely to catch up with him in terms of numbers of posts.)

    Anyway, welcome aboard!

(Also- Clint Nageotte isn’t a rookie any more. Thus he is ineligible for the Future Forty.)

Was wondering why their blog was rather dead

  15. AK1984 on February 1st, 2005 10:58 pm

Ah, the Illuminati…now there is somethin’ that we all can go off-topic ’bout.

  16. Paul Covert on February 1st, 2005 11:31 pm

    Congratulations, Jeff and Peter!

  17. Jeff on February 2nd, 2005 12:12 am

Hey all. Much obliged for the kind words and best wishes. It’s great to join up with a crew of guys as bright and fun as this. We’ll do our best, and I’m sure looking forward to it!

Will USS Mariner be linked at All-Baseball.com now? Or are they looking for a new Mariner blog?

    Or, I guess, possibly, neither?

  19. vj on February 2nd, 2005 1:41 am

Is this USS Mariner’s response to the launch of Lookout Landing?
Well, whatever, I enjoyed Peter’s and Jeff’s work at Marinermusings and look forward to reading it here. I’ll miss the convenient link from Musings over to Will Carrol Presents, though.

  20. Willy on February 2nd, 2005 2:20 am

Oh no!! The USSM is becoming the Yankees of the M’s blogsphere! *lol*
Congratulations on landing two great additions in this off-season! 😉 It’s definitely welcoming news for the readers of this site that the already wonderful blog has stocked up on even more talent. This will make for a wonderful season and beyond!

  21. djw on February 2nd, 2005 6:16 am

Excellent. I’ve known these guys are good writers, but I’ve been afraid to read any other M’s blogs, because my daily trawl is already entirely too time-consuming, and I instituted a “no net new blogs” policy. This, of course, helps me cheat.

  22. David J Corcoran on February 2nd, 2005 6:22 am

    Welcome!!!

  23. Bill J on February 2nd, 2005 7:32 am

That’s it. I’m calling Michael Powell at the FCC. This media consolidation has just gone too far. Oh wait… 😉

Seriously, congrats guys. Y’all and LL are pretty much the “Must Read M’s Blogs” now.

  24. Idahobob on February 2nd, 2005 7:35 am

Congratulations on a wise venture. I think this is a perfect union of styles and perspectives.

  25. Laurie on February 2nd, 2005 8:29 am

good move – welcome to Peter & Jeff!

  26. Vin on February 2nd, 2005 8:48 am

  27. Metz on February 2nd, 2005 9:06 am

Nice additition to the staff guys. Now when I win the MBSBL I can say I triumphed over the USSM staff. 🙂

  28. Evan on February 2nd, 2005 9:18 am

I don’t know if I should congratulate USSM for landing Jeff and Peter, or congratulate Jeff and Peter for joining USSM.

As a reader, it’s a nice problem to have.

  29. Aaron on February 2nd, 2005 9:50 am

USSM is gathering all the best Mariners minds from across the country….so how long before you offer a monthly print magazine and really go mainstream?
Seriously, I’d pay more for that than I would for SI or ESPN Mag.

  30. Shannon on February 2nd, 2005 10:19 am

This is very cool, welcome Jeff and Peter. I’d been wondering why there hadn’t been any new content in awhile over on Mariner Musings…

  31. peter on February 2nd, 2005 10:49 am

Wowzers. Thanks for all the kind words. I’m pretty psyched about what’s going on and am looking forward to the new year. Just two weeks until pitchers and catchers report?

Just to be clear: USS Mariner is a separate entity from All-Baseball. The break-up is an amicable it’s-not-you-it’s-me thing. But that’s not really what matters. We think the world of those guys. And you still need to be reading every single thing they write.

Just do it after your daily dose of USSM.

  32. Christopher Michael on February 2nd, 2005 11:30 am

This is the best thing about blogs. Writers getting together and adding more and more depth to every post! More for us readers to enjoy!

  33. David on February 2nd, 2005 2:24 pm

My goodness, it’s a Mariners uber-blog. Congrats to all. Does this mean it’ll be called Mariner Musings of USS Mariner?

  34. mcfly on February 2nd, 2005 4:06 pm

Now there is one less link to distract me at work! What will fill the void?

  35. KW on February 2nd, 2005 5:14 pm

So how many prospects did you give up to acquire Jeff and Peter?

  36. Jeremy on February 2nd, 2005 5:42 pm

JMB would have been at Sports and Bremertonians over a year ago, but we couldn’t get a deal done.
