Oregonian on Bucky’s dad

John Canzano tells a strange tale in his latest (fake demographic information required).
Essentially, uh… Bucky’s dad, Larry Laverne Jacobsen, has over the course of his life spent a lot of time representing himself as Larry Paul Jacobson, who had a bit of an NFL career. It gets weirder from there.

I saw that stumbling around for minor league info earlier in the night, and I was a bit shocked, didn’t know whether to make my own post about it or just pass it by.
I think I remember the broadcasters making mention of Bucky’s dad as having spent time in the NFL as well, so the farce seems to have a wide influence.

I admit I fell for this when compiling info for Grand Salami profiles. Kudos to Jon Wells for flagging that and editing it out. Apparently the “fake Larry” story has been making the press-box rounds for a while. Wonder why, then, it took an Oregonian reporter to write it?
Reminds me of the times, years ago, when I was trapped in some godawful social situation and, pressed for my name, I would offer up monikers from Mariners past: “Jack Perconte” was a favorite, as was “Jim Maler,” “Dave Edler,” “Rob Dressler” and “Bud Bulling.” Somehow, “Enrique Romo” didn’t go over too well, though.
I met the guy last July during Bucky’s first homestand with the M’s. Having grown up in New Jersey a NY Giants fan, I asked him if he was the Larry Jacobsen who played with the Giants. He said “Same one”. When we interviewed Bucky for a Grand Salami cover piece later that month we asked him if it had helped him having a dad who’d played professional football. He quickly said he didn’t want to talk about that and stressed that he’d grown up with his mom and his stepdad and that was the guy he considered his real dad (that question didn’t run in the interview…).
The guy also called us a couple of times trying to buy some of the copies of GS with Bucky on the cover. Every time I called him back he was out of town and he never followed thru. Bucky’s mom, on the other had, was very nice and she bought a ton of copies at Safeco…
Wow, Jon — I can’t imagine how weird that must be for Bucky to be in situations like that.
It would seem that “Wanker’s Corner” is a perfectly named place for Bucky’s dad to hang out.
Les Carpenter had a sunday magazine piece about Jacobsen last year (August 01, 2004 if you’ve given the Times’ reservation info) where he pointed out the truth of Larry Jacobsen’s life without flat saying he tended to lie — mostly I think because Carpenter was more interested in showing that Bucky’s mom and stepdad Larry Malmberg were the real influences in his life.
Did he play with Al Martin?
Did he serve in Vietnam with Tim Johnson?
Why is this news?
I think that LARRY JACOBSEN should be cut some slack. What he’s doing, people are always doing.
Once, I told a friend that a guy told me that a co-worker of his said he used to play baseball for the New York Giants.
“Look in this book,” I said to the guy, handing him THE BASEBALL ENCYCLOPEDIA. Before I could finish the story, the friend exclaimed (incredulously), “You didn’t?’
(BTW, the co-worker’s name wasn’t in the book.)
[And what is SHOELESS JOE’s Eddie Scissons? Just a symbol of all those people who do that.]
Cut some slack? Lot’s of people impersonate people. Not many of those use the impersonation as a way to get in to someones pockets. He grandstaned on Bucky’s glory. This guy is a certifiable con man. I was one who he ‘STOLE’ 13K from. There are plenty of others. He has a trail of debt that a child could follow. More will come out on this story. Bucky could teach his dad a few lessons in life. Hard work gets rich rewards. Larry ‘aka Jake’ Jacobsen has no Idea what hard work means.

I agree that it is too bad Bucky was fathered by such an individual as Larry Laverne ‘Jake’ Jacobsen. For those who feel this issue should be kept quiet for the sake of Bucky or that ‘Jake’ should be given a break…need to consider how doing so effects the hundreds that ‘Jake’ has defrauded, myself being one. Jake is a perfect example of how ONE individual can have an effect, though not positive, on so many. The first paragraph of the Oregonian story tells it all. The only type of “Bull” Jake ever shot came from the south end of a north bound Elk.

Seems kinda funny to me to be reading all this information about the infamous Mr. Jacobsen. This is ironic to me because i was just about to be scammed by the ever convincing con man. I really appreciate all the helpfull information from all of the other victoms of the notoriously lazy lying worthless man. It is truely unfortunate that people like this take advantage of the hard working people in the world who struggle everyday to survive. Anybody that has any doubt that this man is a con really ought to examine their own morals and question themselves. I would like to see more written about this guy somebody please post a phone number I would love to talk with you..
