Silva DL’ed; Morrow activated

Dave · May 9, 2009 at 1:53 pm · Filed Under Mariners

The M’s cleared a roster spot for Brandon Morrow by putting Carlos Silva on the DL with a made up injury – I’m sorry, inflammation – so that he can go to Peoria and work on some stuff. Jason Vargas will take his spot in the rotation, beginning with a start on Tuesday against the Rangers.

Also, line-ups are already out for the game tonight, so I’ll toss those up now, but we’ll still have a game thread later.

Francisco Liriano is licking his chops as we speak.

    yeah, thinking the same thing.
gonna be a tough day to break out of this offensive ‘slump’

Is Lopez batting second because he plays second base?

I can’t think of any other reason.

I wonder what they’re saying is “inflamed.” Other than, you know, the M’s hopes for this season and Silva’s hope for a career (or even a memory of his name that doesn’t involve eternal association with the word “sucks”).

Well, since the M’s make scrubs look like Cy Young candidates, maybe the perversity of the universe ensures they’ll bat Liriano around. Though his FIP is actually better than his ERA and he’s been doing pretty good on the K/9 and BB/9 front. And the Twins just upgraded at catcher and 2nd base. Ugh.

    From MLB.com’s report:

“Seattle also placed right-hander Carlos Silva on the 15-day DL — retroactive to May 7 — with inflammation on his right shoulder.

The 30-year-old Silva has been battling problems on that shoulder since being forced from his April 25 start against the Angels after five innings. He then did not make it through the fourth inning in either of his following two starts.”

    Way to play along, MLB.com.

But what they don’t say is that inflammation can be so tricky, and last for weeks, nay months…

    Sorry for the double post.

But regarding Liriano? Call me crazy, but I have a hunch we’re going to belt him all over the lot.

One of the two entities has got to bust out of the funk today, and I vote for us.

Acute suckitis, huh? I hear that causes inflammation of the ERA.

I think the Mariners should play it safe with Silva’s “inflamed ERA er shoulder” and put him on the 60 Day DL.

    That would inflamed shouldera

So just to throw the question out there: will we ever see Carlos Silva pitch with the Ms again?

I don’t think we’ll see him start in an M’s uniform again. Unfortunately I think there’s a pretty good chance he’ll turn up in the bullpen.

In the annals of legendarily overpaid/underperforming pitchers, Silva may live on among the accursed names of Chan Ho Park and Carl Pavano. (The only thing that may save him from rolling off the national popular tongue in their company is the relative obscurity that comes with playing for the Mariners.) And the history of those two shows that even horrifically bad pitchers can find a second (or third) act, albeit somewhere else. But at least this year, especially with all the injuries the team has been enduring, I would expect to see him pop up in the bullpen as this year’s Designated Mateo (aka gascan) for when you have a seemingly insurmountable lead you want to demonstrate actually is surmountable. Though given the M’s offensive woes, there may not be many opportunities for Silva to snatch humiliating defeat from the jaws of certain victory.

It’s interesting to look back at what USSM had to say about Silva when his signing was looming. I hate to say they told us so, but… they told us so.
